Introduction
this mini lesson is about the five senses and the sensory organs
Task
Student uses software to create a mind map about the 5 senses.
Student uses the Internet as a source of information
Student takes an online questionnaire
Process
a.Focusing event - Warm up:
Place the mystery box in front of the class.
Ask the students how we could find out what is in the box: What does it sound like? What does it smell like?
b. Teaching procedures
Presentation: a) activate prior knowledge:
Remove the box.
Did the students guess correctly?
Pass out popcorn to students
Ask more questions when they get the popcorn about how it feels, tastes and sounds like.
b) emphasize function :
Ask the students to explain what they used to find out what was under the box.
Discuss the five senses, and the sensory organs. (Use close-up pictures of objects, while matching the organ and the sense)
c) establish structures :
Descriptive sense words: loud, soft, hard, rough, heavy, light, etc.
d) check-up :
Guided practice/ Controlled practice:
Go to the computer and do the interactive activities about the five senses
Ask the students to take notes about what they see, feel and taste.
Pair Work:
Ask the students to describe to their classmate an experience about their favorite food:
What does it look like?
What does it taste like?
What sound does it make when you eat it?
Free practice:
Use a computer software to create a mind map about the five senses
c. Wrap-up:
Brain storm on board
Re use close-up pictures to match the sense and the organ
d. Reteach activity (if needed):
e. Student Participation: interacts with their classmates while working in pairs actively responds to questions (oral)
f. Closure:
Provide a handout
g. Homework:
Find out about colorblindness:
Colorblindness is an inherited condition caused by a defect in the cone receptors of the retinas of the eyes. Very few women are colorblind, but approximately one in ten men has some degree of colorblindness
Go to : http://colorvisiontesting.com/online%20test.htm, take the test, and share your results with the class, talk about what impact colorblindness might have on a person's daily life. How could being colorblind influence a person's choice of career?
Evaluation
- Formative check:
Discussing after the activity.
Did the students describe their experience of using their senses, using the appropriate words?
Were the students able to identify the sensory organs used?
Did the students appropriately respond to the questions asked during the interactive activity?
b. Summative check: Quiz about the 5 senses and the organ that represent each.
Conclusion
It is important that all student analyzes, discusses and experiments different learning situations and puts into practice techniques that respond to all of his/her needs in a science class.
When learning about the senses, students need interactive activities, more TPR, as visual and kinesthetic material, so they have chance to experiment and use all their senses.
