Becoming Canadian

Introduction

Every year, many people immigrate to Canada. Imagine you are 18 years old and you are coming to Canada with your parents. The plan is to stay here and you would therefore like to get your Canadian Citizenship. How do you become a Canadian Citizen?

Task

Your job is to research how to become a Canadian Citizen: Where do you go? What do you have to do? How long does it take?

Not everyone in Canada becomes a Canadian Citizen. Find out what being a 'Permanent Resident' means. What could be a reason for not becoming a Canadian Citizen? What is the difference between a Canadian Citizen and Permanent Resident? Do they have the same Rights and Responsibilities?

You will present your knowledge to the class. You can organize your presentation using Glogster or Google Presentation.

Process

Here are the steps to help you get started. The steps are a guide and if you find other interesting questions and related areas you would like to explore, go for it :-) Use your Graphic Organizer to keep your notes organized (hand in your notes on the due date).

There are several websites provided throughout the project, but you are welcome to find your own, reliable, websites. You can also research if we have any place/office here in town that could answer your questions (ie. SPH Immigration Services)

This website "Discover Canada" is the study guide for upcoming Canadians and it can be used for many of the research areas. Are you ready? Let's get started:

  • Introduce the topic (What is this project about?)
  • Define what 'Canadian Citizen' and 'Permanent Resident' means.
  • Define what 'Multiculturalism' means (Use the textbook "Connections Canada 5" Chapter 4, page 60 as inspiration)
