Becoming a Great Test Taker

If you are a 3rd grade student approaching your first year of EOGs, then you are in the right place!

Before you being your WebQuest, consider the following questions...

Have you heard your teachers mention the EOGs this year?

Are you curious about what the tests will be like?

Would you like some tools to help you be successful on test day?

If you answered YES to these questions, then come along and start your WebQuest journey!

Task

Are you read to begin?  Here is your task...

Imagine you are a 3rd grade student at _______ Elementary School.  You are taking your first EOG test in a few days and are getting very nervous.  Together with your group, design a "plan of attack" for test day.  This will include a detailed plan where you indicate how many hours of sleep to get the night before, a full breakfast menu for that morning, relaxation strategies for when you are feeling anxious, and a preferred physical activity you would like to partiipate in after the test is over.

Process

Here are the steps you need to take:

1.  First, establish jobs within your group

A) Recorder:  This person will take notes during your research time.  He or she will need paper and a pencil.  It is this person's responsbility to make sure the notes are neat and organized.

B) Computer Technition:  This person will sit directly in front of the computer and control the mouse during your reserach time.

C) Reporter:  This person will help the recorder decide what is important to write down as you reserach.  This person will also direct the Computer Technition about when to scroll down or move on to the next page.

All three of you will work together to create your final plan.

2.  Being your research!  Visit the following sites and record all important information.  Remember your prompt as you decide what is important enough to write down and use for later.

  • Sleep:  Here you'll find information about the importance of sleep and how much sleep someone your age needs.  There is a lot of information on this website so try not to get overwhelmed.  Instead, just stick to the information in the section about children ages 5-12, this link will take you right to it.   http://sleepfoundation.org/sleep-topics/children-and-sleep/page/0,2/

 

3.  Create the final product.  Use the information you've learned and your notes to create your final draft.  Your final product should include the following 4 main sections:

-Sleep:  Include how many hours of sleep you will plan to get the night before the test and 1-2 facts about why sleep is important for children.

-Breakfast:  Provide a detailed menu for breakfast the morning of the test and 1-2 sentences about why you choose this particular meal.

-Relaxation:  Provide at least 3 relaxation strategies that can be implemented on test day. 

-Physcial Activity:  Provide 1-2 sentences about why exercise is important for children and why you feel it is important to exercise after taking a test.  Include one activity or exercise of your choice.

Other than these requirements (see the Evaluation section for more details), the final product can be in any format or design that you wish.  It can be a typed document, a poster, a graphic organizer, or something else!  Be creative and have fun!

4.  Be prepared to share your final product with the class on your assigned date and time.

**Extra Credit**

Want to step it up a notch?!  Using all the information you've learned, write a letter to a 2nd grade student who will be taking their first EOG test next year.  Use this letter to tell them what you've learned and the tools that they need to be successful when taking a test.  Be sure to include appropriate headings, closings, and a body when drafting the letter.

Evaluation

Here's how you'll be graded on your work:

Criteria Points Possible Points Earned
Jobs are assigned in the beginning and are used appropriately 0-3
Research:  Research is conducted properly, all websites are visited, and good, organized notes are taken 0-7
Final Product:  All areas (sleep, breakfast, relaxation strategies, and physical activity) are represented 0-10
Final Product: All information is correct, work is free of spelling and gramatical errors 0-10
Final Product: The final product is creative and shows teamwork 0-10
Final Presentation:  All group members participate in the presentation (take turns speaking, make eye contact with the audience) 0-5

Total Points: 45

Extra Credit: 0-5 points

Total Points with Extra Credit: 50

Conclusion

Congratulations!

You've finished the WebQuest and now have a wonderful plan of attack for test day!  You are ready to put your knowledge of appropriate sleep, healthy eating, ways to relax, and the importance of exercise to use soon.

Directed Audience:

This WebQuest is designed for 3rd Grade students preparing to take the EOGs.  This WebQuest is intended for students to work in groups of three, but can be changed as necessary.

Curriculum and Approach:

This WebQuest is designed from a School Counselor's perspective and can be used in a variety of methods including individual counseling, small group counseling, or classroom guidance in the format of a unit.  Additionally, this WebQuest can also be implemented by classroom teachers in a general education clasroom setting.  The following American School Counselor Association Standards are addressed through this assignment.
