Needs Versus Wants

Introduction

It is important to know the difference between a need and a want. If we handle and budget our money correctly, we can figure out what we can afford to buy! In your groups, I will need you to go to the store and buy 6 items that you can afford.

Task

Hi, you have been split into groups of five to work as a team to purchase 3 needs and 3 wants at the store with your money. As a group, you have five dollars in coins and bills to spend at the store on these needs and wants. You must figure out what you can afford and how you can come home with the 6 items.

Process

1. Get in your groups and count out your money.

2. Browse the store to see how much everything costs.

3. Look to see if items are a need or a want.

4. With your group, make a list of 3 items that you need and 3 items that you want.

5. Calculate and budget to make sure that you can afford all 6 items.

6. Purchase those items from the store.

Evaluation

After you have purchased your items from the store, you will present them as a group to the class. Please describe...

1. Which items are needs and which are wants and why.

2. How you came up with your store list and were able to afford all 6 items.

Conclusion

As you guys can see we have to plan and budget to be able to buy our wants and even our needs. We were able to sit down and critically think on how we could buy all 6 items with our five dollars. All of you did a wonderful job of figuring out what you could afford. You may have left some items behind that you wanted, but you were able to get the items that you needed. Great job on selecting need and want items.
