Introduction
First Grade curriculum standards in most states include subtraction and addition. Children need to make real world connections in order to strengthen their understanding of mathematical operations. Many math concepts are built on addition and subtraction, so it's important for first graders to start with a solid foundation. Incorporating hands-on addition and subtraction activities into students learning in the classroom. First graders really like to be on the go, so as teachers must learn to use what they know by making learning math fun. Some ideas are to use tape on the floor and make a number line from 0 to 20. Now with the tape down you can have the students add and subtract just by stepping forward or back. Other object teacher’s use can be dice, beans, and flash cards. Teachers can use small groups to introduce adding and subtracting to the students.

Task
Our task today is to learn how to do basic addition and subtraction. We will start by going over addition. When you want to find out how many of something there are we use addition. We are going to watch a few examples, and then we will try them on our own.

Next we are going to do some subtraction. You will use subtraction when you are taking a certain number away from what you already have. Let’s watch how you do subtraction now.
Now that we know how to do addition and subtraction, let’s do some problems and learn some new ways to add and subtract.

Process
There are a lot of ways to add and subtract.
Adding and subtracting with linking cubes:

Evaluation
Now, that we have learned how to do addition and subtraction we are going to see just how well you can do it. We are going to do a timed test to see how many you can do, and do correctly. I am going to pull it up on the screen and all I want you to do is write your answers down when I say start. When the time is up we will grade them and see how we did. You will have two minutes to complete as many as you can. Is everybody ready? Let’s get started!

Conclusion
With basic addition and subtraction skills learned, we are well on our way to the next steps in math. Since adding and subtracting are things we use in most everyday life, it is very important that we learn how to do this well. Addition and subtraction are the gateway to the mathematical world, and the world as a whole. Most jobs use basic math every day, and most times they don’t even know it. Now after learning how much it’s used, and how easy it can be, who wants to go play more math games?
