Wildlife Warriors

Introduction

Welcome wildlife warriors.

We need you to go on an important mission: saving lives.

There are animals living on our planet that are in danger of becoming extinct. This means some animals may not be found living in the wild in the future. Very often this is because they are or their habitat is being threatened by mankind.

Wildlife warriors, your mission is to help save an endangered animal.

Help us (n.d) [Image] <www.somers.k12.ct.us/~dsenecal/EndangeredAnimals.htm>

Task

In order to help save an animal, you need to know all about it.

Your first task will be to research an endangered animal that you feel passinate about.

* Create some questions and find the answers.

* Collect some photos of your animal

Your second task will be to use this information to make a television add or commercial to tell the world why and how we can help save your animal.

But don't worry, you won't be working alone. This is a big task, so you will be working in a team of four.

Good luck warriors.

Remember; if you can find out why the animal is endangered and how you can help, you can make a difference!

Process

Time to roll up your sleeves and the important job of helping to save an animal.

Step 1.

Below are some animals to investigate.

Choose one animal you feel passionate about helping to save. Now find two other class members who want to research the same animal to make a team.

If you can't find two other members, you may need to select another animal.

As a team, you need to decide what important information you need to find out about your chosen animal. You need to write down at least 3 questions about your animal.

Be creative with your questions, but make sure you try to uncover why the animal is endangered and what could be done to help.

You can also find facts through books in the school library.

Remember, if you are going to help save your animal, you need to find out as much information as you can about it.

Hot tip:

As you research, don't forget to save photos to your personal files on the computer to use later in your commercial (TV add). To save pictures hold the mouse over the photo and click the right button on the mouse. Then select "save picture as" button.

Did you find out the answers to your questions?

Step 3

Now that you have found out all this valuable information about your animal, its time to make your commercial. What message do you need to tell the world to help save your animal?

You need to grab your audience's attention with quick and clever messages. Use simple text and photos to create a commercial using Windows movieMaker.

* Watch this comercial as an example of what you could do.

Evaluation

Each member needs to complete a wildlife warrior Team evalution.

Wildlife Warrior Team Evaluation

3 2 1
Teamwork and collaboration

As a team, we worked exremely well, with all members contributing, sharing ideas and encouraging each other.

As a team we worked well, although some members contributed more than others. We shared most ideas and used some encouragement with each other. As a team we did not work together and not all members contributed. We had difficulty sharing ideas and listening to others.

Science understanding

(ACSSU073)

Through our research, we learnt a lot of information about our animal and it relies on its environment for survival. Through our research, we learnt some information about our animal and it relies on the environment for survival. Through our research we did not learn very much about our animal and how it relies on the environment for survival.

Human Endeavour

(ACSHE062)

Through our reseach we fully understand why our animal is endangered. We used this knowledge in our commercial to help save our animal.
We have some understanding of why our animal is endangered. We used this knowledge to help save our animal. We did not understand why our animal is endanged. We don't know how to help save our animal.

Science Inquiry

(ACSIS065)

As a group, we were able to plan excellent questions and research their answers. As a group, we were able to plan good questions and research some of their answers. As a group, we had difficulty planning questions to investigate and problems finding their answers.

Presentation

We created a very effective commercial that was a good snapshot of what we had learnt. Our commercial was fairly effective and showed some of what we had learnt. Our commercial was not effecctive and didn't show what we had learnt.

ICT use

We successfully used the internet links to find information and photos, and confidently operate windows movie maker to create a commercial without assistance. We used the suggested links to find information and photos with some assistance and needed some help to operate windows movie maker to create a commercial.

We needed help to access the internet links to find the information and save the photos and supervision and assistance to operate movie maker to create a commercial.

Comments:

Conclusion

Well done Wildlife Warriors.

By researching your animal and creating your commercial, you and your team are helping to create awareness of the problem these animals face. The more people know and understand the more that can be done to help save them.

Now what to do?

 • Show your commercials to the rest of the school at a school assembly.
 • Show your commercial to family and friends and talk about what you have learnt.
 • Write an article for the school newsletter or local paper to help educate the wider community.

Teacher Page

Wildlife Warriors is developed as an interactive webquest for grade 4 students to learn about endangered animals. It is designed to be engaging and very student centred, incorporating a popular topic and a realistic task. It is designed to help students understand that scientific research and knowledge, along with action, can make a difference.

Learning Objectives:

For the students to research how an animal is dependent on its environment for survival. (ACSSU073).(Science Understanding). (ACARA,n.d.)

For the students to understand that the knowledge of animals and its threats can help save endangered animals. (ACSHE062) (Science as a human endeavour). (ACARA,n.d.)

For the students to plan their own investigation and find the answers to their own questions.(ACSIS065) (Science inquiry skills).(ACARA,n.d.)

For the students to work cooperatively as part of a team.

For the students to enhance and develop their ICT skills.

Teaching Strategy

Based on the inquiry based learning pedagogy, this webquest promotes active and deep learning, motivating students to want to learn more. The teaching approach used for this webquest is indirect instruction using inquiry learning, and interactive instruction using cooperative learning. From the start, it is very student centred, with students choosing the animal they feel passionate about and finding a team with the same interest. The webquest allows students to work at their own ability level and to use their social, creative, investigative and ICT skills.
