Introduction
The healthcare system has been identified as America’s fastest growing and booming industry. Are you considering joining the labor forces in the promising health care system? Today we are going to explore the endless possibilities of career building opportunities in health care! We will have a lot of fun through a series of educational and informational tasks and more importantly, to have an idea of what we want to do in our life after high school. Doesn’t that make you feel awesome? Let’s get started! :-)

Task
On groups of three, each one of you will have one of the following ROLES:
- The technology guru:
You know everything about technology; you use them daily expertly to communicate and create new stuff. Your best interest is to build a career around technology where you are using technology to do bigger, better things for the world. You will find one job related to technology use in the healthcare system.
- The medical expert:
You are the expert who knows everything about medical treatment. Seeing to the patients' comfort and relief is your biggest pursuit. You want to become the person who can cure any possible ailments in the world! Your job is to find one career related to treating patients with medical tools directly.
- The administrative insider:
You love managing and being the boss! You want to facilitate the technology guru and the medical expert by administering and organizing everything efficiently. You run the institution! Find a career in the medical administration field that you love and present it to the class.
Though with different concentrations, all of you will explore one possible job and provide a presentation with the following information about the job you have explored:
1) Name of the career
2) Image or clip art of career
3) Job description and responsibilities
4) Education requirements, high school courses one would need, post-high school certifications and exams required
5) Job outlook: How many jobs are predicted to be available in the future? Will there be more jobs or fewer jobs?
6) Average salary for entry level and experienced worker (if both are available)
7) Lexile level for the career (or career cluster)
8) College or trade School that offers a program for this career
9) What is the name of the school?
10) Where is it located?
11) How much is tuition?
12) Are scholarships or grants available?
Then as a group, you will integrate your personal presentations into one and present it as a group to your class! Every group will have 40-50 minutes to present and answer questions from the audience!
Process
First, you will all need to meet as a group to select your role in the group, and discuss the content and format of your presentation, a list of tasks to do and a timeline for specific tasks to be completed, and a meeting agenda for the future dates when you will meet to discuss each other’s progress and help your teammates to trouble shoot.
Second, each of you will need to work independently to explore one job in your selected field (technology, medical treatment, or administration).
Third, you will need to construct your own section of presentation with all available technological tools (web 2.0 tools, cameras, etc.)
Fourth, you will work together as a group to finalize the design of your presentation and rehearse!
Fifth, you are done! Get ready to showcase your work to the class!

- Essential Question:
What do I want as a career(s) after my schooling?
What do I need to do in order to have that career (college degree, professional licensure, cost, etc)?
- Learners:
Grade 9-12 students both males and females, from a diverse ethnic groups and different learning styles and abilities. No learning disabilities.
Students may think that the content of this webquest is too common: healthcare only have doctors and nurses and that’s about it! However, there are tons of different occupations related to healthcare—think about medical insurance companies, government medical organizations, and with the technological advancement today, there are even more new jobs being created every day. So I believe if I stress this point to my students before they work as a group, they will have a new kind of curiosity to explore.
I think students nowadays are very used to powerpoint/prezi presentations because most high schools teachers use them to teach classes. So hopefully students will get excited by creating their own presentation!
- Goals:
My goals is to help my students to achieve the following PA State Academic standards—cited from http://pdesas.org
Career Awareness and Preparation
13.1.11.A: Relate careers to individual interests, abilities, and aptitudes.
13.1.11.B: Analyze career options based on personal interests, abilities, aptitudes, achievements and goals.
13.1.11.H: Review personal high school plan against current personal career goals and select postsecondary opportunities based upon personal career interests.
15.2.12.B: Analyze a specific occupation within a career cluster.
15.2.12.E: Compare and contrast career interests with post-secondary opportunities.
Information and Technology Communications
15.3.12.C: Create a research project based upon defined parameters.
15.3.12.I: Synthesize information gathered from multiple sources (e.g., digital, print, face to face).
15.3.12.J: Apply strategies to overcome barriers to active listening.
15.4.12.A: Apply the creative and productive use of emerging technologies for educational and personal success.
15.4.12.G: Create an advanced digital project using sophisticated design and appropriate software/applications.
15.4.12.L: Find and use primary documentation; employ an accepted protocol for citation
- Objective:
When creating a presentation using the Internet resources, Grade 9-12 high school students will extensively explore jobs earning a 3 on the rubric.
- Time and Organization:
It should take no less than three weeks. The students will work both individually and collaboratively. Please refer to the Task section where I assign roles.
- Habits of Mind
Listening with understanding and empathy
"If you want to be listened to, you should put in time listening."
Marge Piercy
During group communications and role selection, the students will have to negotiate with their group members on how they, as a group, want to achieve the overall objectives of the webquest. They need to communicate well so that they can work efficiently as a whole. Therefore active listening is crucial in the success of this webquest project.
Thinking Flexibly:
“I can't understand why people are frightened by new ideas.
I'm frightened of old ones.”
John Cage
Students will work independently to explore the job within the field they have selected (technology, medical treatment, or administration), it is assumed that the students will always first turn to some jobs that they have heard of, e.g. nurses, doctors, secretaries. Yet there are so many new different jobs out there in this fast developing industry. I want my students to think outside the convention, or the old tradition, to explore whole new possibilities.
- Differentiated Instruction
I differentiate the content by asking the students to pick their roles within one group. Also the flexibility of their choices in putting together a presentation is also a differentiation of process and product based on Ann Thomlinson’s differentiation of instruction model. This differentiated tasks will help ALL students because they all have a chance to select what field within healthcare they want to explore, and how they want to explore it (using different links I gave under the “resources” section).
