Michigan's Native Americans
People of the Three Fires

Picture Hello 3rd graders! This journey, or quest that we will be going on in this web experience is about two of the three more famous Native American tribes of Michigan. We will use of knowledge and skills that we have gained throuought the course of this unit to complete this quest and gain a better understanding of our Native Michiganders. While Michigan was home to many Native American tribes, three important tribes were known as the Three Fires.  They were the Ojibwe, the Ottawa, and the Potawatomi.  They shared a common culture:  similar language, housing, food, trade, and customs. We will be focusing on the chippewa and Potawatomi tribes as we look for more information about thier language, housing, food, trade, and customs.

Task

You've all been tasked with finding information on the natural resources that the Chippewa and Potawatomi tribes used in Michigan. Pretend that you are all historians from our  current time who have recently uncovered new information about two tribes of Native Americans called the Chippewa and Potawatomi. Use these questions below to guide you on your way to understanding more about thier way of life. Are there any similiarities? Are there differences?

1. Find out which materials were used for the following things:

Food

Housing

Hunting

Transportation

2. Record your results and bring it back to your group to compare what you have found.

3. Create a chart or venn diagram to show what each tribe used differently or simillarly

4. Once you have completed the previous steps, write a short story from the perspective of a historian who has to present thier findings to a class of elementary students.
