Navigating a Grocery Store

Introduction

This WebQuest is designed to help students go food shopping independently. This lesson is especially useful if you have a field trip planned to a local grocery store. It is created for students in the life-skills program at either the high school or middle school level.

Task

Can you create a grocery list and food shop independently?

Process

The students should be able to:

  • Using google docs, create a grocery list for desired items.
  • Put the list in order based on category (I.e., fruits, vegetables, meat)
  • Create a script to assist in asking for help/ social greetings with staff
  • Identify money and change
  • Navigate through the grocery store finding items based on their lists
  • Pay the grocery bill and figure out correct amount of change
Evaluation

Students will be evaluated on their ability to use google docs, categorize food items, interact appropriately with others, and organize/collect the correct amount of change.

Conclusion

Food shopping is an important part of life. Being able to organize a list of desired items and then being able to find them in the store is a skill that could take practice.  In addition, students should feel comfortable and use the appropriate language to facilitate conversations with staff members at the grocery store. Lastly, students can work on their money skills while being able to pay when finished shopping.

This lesson is created for students in the life-skills program at either the high school or middle school level. Students will target their speech and language goals in preparation for this field trip. Skills targeted include: target vocabulary, categorization, eye contact, initiating and maintaining a conversation, money skills, and creating lists to assist with memory. This field trip can give students a first experience at a potential job at a grocery store.
