Natural Resources: Earth's Gifts to Us!

Introduction

Welcome, Science Explorers!

Did you know that everything we use in our daily lives comes from nature? From the food we eat to the cars we drive and even the buildings we live in — natural resources make it all possible. But these resources are limited and need to be used wisely!

Your mission is to become a Resource Ranger and investigate how we use natural resources in our lives — and how we can take care of them for the future.

This WebQuest covers 3rd Grade Science TEKS b.(11) Earth and space. The student understands how natural resources are important and can be managed. The student is expected to: (A) explore and explain how humans use natural resources such as in construction, in agriculture, in transportation, and to make products;

Task

You will work in teams to research how natural resources are used in one of the following areas:

  • Construction

  • Agriculture

  • Transportation

  • Making Products

Each team will:

  1. Explore online resources and videos.

  2. Create a digital or poster-based presentation explaining how humans use natural resources in your assigned area.

  3. Include ideas on how we can conserve or protect these resources.

  4. Present your findings to the class.

Process

Step 1: Get Your Job!

The class will be divided into 4 groups. Each group will be assigned one of the following:

Group Topic
1 Construction
2 Agriculture
3 Transportation
4 Product Manufacturing

Step 2: Explore Resources

Use these links to help you understand your topic:

General Resources for All Groups:

Topic-Specific Hints

  • Construction: Learn about rocks, sand, clay, wood, and metals.

  • Agriculture: Focus on water, soil, and plants.

  • Transportation: Think about fuel sources like oil, gas, and rubber.

  • Products: Investigate how we use trees for paper or oil for plastic.

Step 3: Gather and Organize

Use your Science Notebook to:

  • Write what natural resources your group’s topic uses

  • Draw or insert images

  • Answer: “Why is it important to protect these resources?”

Step 4: Create Your Presentation

  • Google Slides or PowerPoint presentation

Be sure to answer:

  • What are the natural resources used?

  • How are they used in your topic area?

  • How can we use them responsibly?

Evaluation
Criteria 4 – Excellent 3 – Good 2 – Developing 1 – Beginning
Research Deep and accurate info Mostly accurate Some confusion Minimal info
Creativity Very creative and engaging Some creativity A little creative Not creative
Teamwork Everyone participated Mostly worked together Uneven effort Little teamwork
