Natural Hazards

Introduction

At 12.51 p.m. on Tuesday 22 February 2011, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake caused severe damage in Christchurch and Lyttelton, killing 185 people and injuring several thousand. The earthquake's epicentre was near Lyttelton, just 10 km south-east of Christchurch's central business district. It occurred nearly six months after the 4 September 2010 earthquake.

Task

You will be creating an A3 poster detailing your investigations findings of the 2011 Christchurch, New Zealand Earthquake.

Process

You will explore the effect of natural hazards on landscapes and how people attempt to prevent future hazards.

This will be done by:

  • outlining the case study, including the location and what happened.
  • identifying the geomorphic hazard
  • describing how the geomorphic hazard occurs include specific information to New Zealand
  • exploring the impact of geomorphic hazards
    • Environmental impacts eg changes to the landscape
    • Social impacts eg loss of home, loss of life
    • Economic impacts eg loss of jobs, cost to the Government
  • Uncovering ways in which people minimise the impact of future geomorphic hazards eg warning signs and systems, evacuation plans

Evaluation

Catergory 4 3 2 1
Organisation Content is well organized using headings or bulleted lists to group related material. Uses headings or bulleted lists to organize, but the overall organization of topics appears flawed. Content is logically organized for the most part. There was no clear or logical organizational structure, just lots of facts.
Use of Time Used time well during each class period with no adult reminders Used time well during most class periods with no adult reminders Used time well  but required adult reminders on one or more occasions to do so. Used time poorly  in spite of several adult reminders to do so.
Cooperation Worked cooperatively with partner all the time with no need for adult intervention. Worked cooperatively with partner most of time but had a few problems that the team resolved themselves. Worked cooperatively with partner most of the time, but had one problem that required adult intervention. Content Covers topic in-depth with details and examples. Subject knowledge is excellent. The work goes well beyond requirements Includes essential knowledge about the topic. Subject knowledge appears to be good. The work contains all of the required elements. Includes essential information about the topic but there are  factual errors. The work contains most of the required elements Content is minimal OR there are several factual errors. The work is missing more than 2 of the required elements.
Attractiveness Makes excellent use of font, color, graphics, effects, etc. to enhance the poster Makes good use of font, color, graphics, effects, etc. to enhance to poster. Use of font, color, graphics, effects etc. but these often distract from the poster's content

Conclusion

Congratulations!  Your hard work will allow you to inform people on how to be better prepared when a natural hazard becomes a natural disaster and hopefully the management steps may prevent further loss of life and damage to buildings.
