Native Americans of Florida

Introduction

Long before Europeans began sailing across the Atlantic to the "New World," Native Americans lived here.  There were many tribes representing many languages, customs and life styles in our own state of Florida.  Some of the most known tribes in our state included the Tocobaga, the Tequesta, the Timucua, the Calusa and the Appalachee, but there were many more.

Sadly, today, there remain but a few Seminoles across our state.  Who were the people who lived on this land before us?  What was life like for them?  What happened to them?

Task

Long before Europeans began sailing across the Atlantic to the "New World," Native Americans lived here.  There were many tribes representing many languages, customs and life styles in our own state of Florida.  Your task is to work in pairs and choose two of Florida's Native American Peoples to learn more about.  You will create a power point presentation to share with your classmates.  Your power point should include the names of your tribes, the area of Florida they lived in, a description of how their villages were built, an explanation of their customs, a description of their diet, the roles of each member of the tribe (men, women, children), and what happened to them once the Europeans began to explore and colonize the state.

*Note:  The five main tribes included; the Calusa, the Tocobaga, the Tequesta, the Timicua, and the Appalachee.  If your research leads you to take interest in a different tribe, you may ask permission to report on them instead.

Process

You will use a minimum of three internet based resources to complete the research on your chosen tribe.

1.  Choose your tribes.

2.  Create a graphic organizer to jot notes on each required section of the power point report.

3.  Browse websites like those listed below, to look for information in each given area and take notes as you read.  Be sure to write down or remember which websites you used as you will need to include the names of your resources in your power point.

4.  Create your power point - include images, captions, artifacts etc... to add detail or visual element.

5.  Practice for your oral presentation
