Native American Tribes

Introduction

Imagine growing up on the open prairies of Nebraska as child in a Native American tribe.  You and your family live with other relatives and tribe members and your life is nothing like the one you currently have.  Instead of jeans and Nike tennis shoes, what types of clothing do you think you wore?  Where do you think you slept?  How would you gather your food?  What was your role in the tribe?  Native Americans were the first ones to live in our state and their history is an important part of our story.

Through this WebQuest, you will learn about the every day life of Native American tribes that once lived in Nebraska.

Task

You will research two of the following Native American tribes:

1. Ponca

2. Otoe

3. Pawnee

4. Omaha

For each tribe, you will research the following:

1.  Where did they live?

2.  What language did they speak?

3.  What was life like for the children in the tribe?

4.  What were the jobs of the men and women of the tribe?

5.  What were their homes like?

6.  Describe their clothing that they wore.

7.  What did they eat for food?

8.  What did the tribe use for weapons?

After you have researched two tribes, you will create a Venn Diagram comparing the two tribes to show their similarities and differences.

Process

Step 1:

Pick 2 of the following tribes to research:

1.  Ponca

2.  Pawnee

3.  Otoe

4.  Omaha

Step 2:

Research these tribes using the following links:

Ponca Tribe

Pawnee Tribe

Otoe Tribe

Omaha Tribe

Step 3:

In your Social Studies journal, answer the following questions about each tribe:

Step 3:

Create a venn diagram comparing the similarities and differences between the two tribes.

Evaluation

Each student's work will be evaluated using the following rubric.

Student Name:     ________________________________________

CATEGORY 4 3 2 1
Content - Accuracy At least 7 accurate facts are displayed on the Venn Diagram. 5-6 accurate facts are displayed on the Venn Diagram. 3-4 accurate facts are displayed on the Venn Diagram. Less than 3 accurate facts are displayed on the Venn Diagram.
Required Elements The Venn Diagramincludes all required elements as well as additional information. All required elements are included on the Venn Diagram. All but 1 of the required elements are included on the Venn Diagram. Several required elements were missing.
Mechanics Capitalization and punctuation are correct throughout the Venn Diagram. There is 1 error in capitalization or punctuation. There are 2 errors in capitalization or punctuation. There are more than 2 errors in capitalization or punctuation.
Use of Class Time Used time well during each class period. Focused on getting the project done. Never distracted others. Used time well during each class period. Usually focused on getting the project done and never distracted others. Used some of the time well during each class period. There was some focus on getting the project done but occasionally distracted others. Did not use class time to focus on the project OR often distracted others.
Attractiveness The Venn Diagram is exceptional in terms of design, layout, and neatness. The Venn Diagram is proficient in terms of design, layout and neatness. The Venn Diagram is acceptable though it may be a bit messy. The Venn Diagram is distractingly messy or very poorly designed. It is not attractive.

Conclusion

Now that you have learned about two Native American tribes from Nebraska, you will now partner up with another student in our class and share your Venn Diagram.  Did you learn about a new tribe that you didn't research?

Extension: After sharing your Venn Diagram, pick one more tribe to research.  When you have collected all of your facts, create a Google Slide and share it with me.  We will take some time throughout the week to share your slide and discuss what we learned about Native Americans from Nebraska.
