Introduction

Nation Heroes

  • Hero: a person who is admired for their courage and achievements or noble qualities.
  • Heroine: a female who is admired for her courage and achievements or noble qualities.
  • National Hero:  a person who has made a substantial contribution to the advancement of society and who represents a nation.

 

The Contributions of the Heroes

  • Nanny of the Maroons was a leader of the Maroons and an outstanding military leader who became a symbol of unity and strength for her people.
  • Samuel Sharpe was the main instigator of the Slave Rebellion and which was had a large contribution in the abolition of slavery.
  • Marcus Garvey established the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in Jamaica. The UNIA, which developed into an international organisation, promoted black people's right to self-government, self-help economic initiatives, and racial justice activism.
  • George William Gordon entered politics in response to attempts to break the spirit of Jamaica's freed people and revert them to slavery.  He urged the population to rebel and fight the harsh and unfair circumstances they were made to live in.
  • Paul Bogle led a protest march to the Morant Bay courthouse due to poverty and injustice in the society and lack of public confidence in the central government.
  • Alexander Bustamante understood that the working class needed to combat the social and economic problems in the nation. As a result, he founded the Jamaica Labour Party.
  •  Norman Manley associated with the cause of the workers during the 1938 labour unrest and gave his time and support to the cause. He established the People's National Party (PNP).

Conclusion

 

A hero is a person who is admired for their courage and achievements or noble qualities. A national hero, however, is a person who has made a substantial contribution to the advancement of society and who represents a nation. Jamaica has six national heroes and one national heroine, all of which have made significant contributions to Jamaica.
