Introduction

Have you ever noticed that the beach looks completely different in the morning versus the afternoon? 

Sometimes the shore is wide and dry, and other times the water creeps almost up to the rocks! 

For centuries, sailors, fishermen, and coastal communities have depended on understanding this mysterious rhythm of the ocean.

You've just been hired as a Junior Ocean Scientist for a coastal research team. 

Your mission: investigate why the ocean rises and falls every day, and create a report that could help local fisherfolk plan their work around the tides. Get ready to explore the moon, the sun, and the pull of gravity the real reasons behind the tides.

Task

By the end of this WebQuest, you and your team will create a short presentation or infographic that explains:

  1. What causes ocean tides
  2. The role of the moon and sun's gravity
  3. The difference between high tide and low tide
  4. Why tides happen twice a day in most places
  5. One real-world example of how tides affect a community (fishing, shipping, tide pools, etc.)

Your final product can be a poster, slideshow, or short video — you decide the format, as long as it clearly explains the science behind tides.

Process
