Introduction
This lesson will have students research and examine the 1920's. They will be prompted to answer questions related to the different aspects of life in the 1920's. After the students have studied two aspects about the 1920's and answered the questions from each section, they will create a 1920's newspaper. This relates to English content standards the students will be learning about past civilization. The students will learn about the different aspects of the 1920's, and be able to examine which ones still remain in today's modern society.
Task
How did the 1920's impact our modern society?
After viewing the website:1920-30.com answer the following questions:
Under the section Politics answer the following?
1. What was the illegal immigrant problem?
2. What was prohibition?
Under the section Movies answer the following?
1. Who the most popular movie star and why?
Under the section Music answer the following?
2. What was the main genre of music and what effect did it have on society?
Under the section Business/Economy answer the following?
1. What was the installment plan? Why was it created?
Under the section Aviation answer the following?
1. What were planes made of before and after the 1920's?
Next, pick a topic that you enjoyed and use what you have learned to create your newspaper.
Process
Webquest Instructions
Teacher will divide the class into eight groups with four students in each group. Next, each student will receive an assigned task to contribute to the newspaper. (1) Politics (2) Entertainment (3) Business (4) Front Page.
Teacher will review the following websites with students through smartboard.
Step 1: Explore
- Afterwards, students may explore with their assigned groups.
Step 2: Research
- The students will answer the questions on the pervious page.
- Teacher will circulate the room to check for understanding and answer questions.
- Students will gather information and images according to their task assigned completing the first part of the newspaper.
- Day 2: Teacher will explore the following websites:
- www.old.newspaperarticle1920/images
- www.cthuhulives.org (example of an newspaper from 1920's)
- www.ehow.com/video (audio/visual instructions on how to create a newspaper)
- www.ehow.com/how_5359450_create-newspaper-template-publisher.html (step-by-step instructions/template)
Step 3: Create
- Sketch the design of each page.
- Include: two photos with captions, news page should be 4 paragraphs in length, neatness is a must, two advertisements with headlines and proofread final project.
- Use all information gathered to create the newspaper.
- Front Page will be a combination of all information gathered.
Step 4: Present
- Present to the class the final project.

Conclusion
After presentations teacher will guide the students in a discussion about the 1920's and make any connections between that time period and modern times. In addition to receiving students' reflections and feedback on the overall experience.

- Then, choose one aspect to explore and gather information.
- Half a day skecthing the layout of the page relating to the assigned task.
- Half a day completing the newspaper.
- Half a day presenting.
