Introduction
Paul is a grade 7 student who dreams of being a carpenter. His teacher gave him an assignment in which he should calculate the perimeter of compound shapes and a circle. However, he received a very low grade on the assignment, and feels that he has to give up his dream of becoming a well known carpenter. I need you to take the role of an explorer and ambassador to find out about perimeter on this WebQuest. You are expected to gain a full understanding of calculating perimeter and be able to complete any assignment on calculating the perimeter of compound shapes and a circle on your own, based on the knowledge you will acquire from this WebQuest. After gaining this knowledge, you will be required to help other students like Paul who has a limited understanding on the topic 'perimeter'. You can report back to these students by illustrating how to calculate perimeter and what is involved in the process. You can be able to assist other students like Paul to broaden their understanding of the topic of 'perimeter' and positively change their view of mathematics. Further, helping these students improve their performance in the subject area.
Task
This WebQuest is designed to promote inquiry, research, and problem solving. Allowing you to explore several databases to gain full understanding on the topic 'perimeter' in mathematics. At the end of this WebQuest, you will be able to:
- Accurately define perimeter in at least one sentence.
- Accurately calculate the perimeter of compound shapes.
- Accurately calculate the perimeter of a circle.
You are expected to explore the different databases and carefully read the information provided to understand the information presented on perimeter. To obtain the right sources and arrive at the different databases you are required to follow all steps. This is necessary so as to deepen your knowledge and complete given tasks. You will encounter several databases such as websites, YouTube and google forms. You are expected to pay keen attention to the information presented so that you can accurately complete different tasks in your progression.
One such example is on google docs, you will be expected to complete a worksheet on calculating the perimeter for compound shapes and a circle. In addition, at the end of this WebQuest, you will be expected to start your group project on perimeter. Please note each group should have 4 persons and the work must be evenly distributed.
Process
This section of the WebQuest will provide you with links to different databases where you will find information on the perimeter of compound shapes and circle. You are expected to work in pairs as you explore this WebQuest for information and complete the different tasks. The steps below should be followed as given. Once again you are expected to pay keen attention to the information. Please discuss each step with your pair to help each other and broaden your understanding as you explore the different databases.
The steps for completing this WebQuest is as follow:
- Click on ‘ Perimeter Introduction’where you will be directed to a website. You will then read carefully to derive the definition of perimeter.
- You will then click on ‘Introduction to Perimeter’ and watch the YouTube video, to be able to accurately calculate the perimeter of regular shapes.
- You will then click on ‘Perimeter of Compound shapes’ and watch the YouTube video. Then you will be able to accurately calculate the perimeter of compound shapes as well as those with missing sides.
- Click on ‘Perimeter of a Circle’ where you will be directed to a website. Then you will be able to accurately calculate the perimeter of a circle using the given the formula. You will be able to practice a question as the solution is already given.
Evaluation
You are expected to form groups of 4 and start your group project on the perimeter of compound shapes and circles.
Below are instructions along with a rubric you should use as a guide when doing your project.
- Choose a compound shape within the classroom for the Compound Shape Investigation.
- Select a circular object within the classroom for the Circle Perimeter Challenge.
