Expedition: Maghreb!

Introduction

"I've lived it in the pages of Saint-Exupery
From Paris to Tunisia, Casablanca to Dakar
I was riding long before I flew
Through the Wind and Sand and Stars..."

-Jimmy Buffett

Today, you will be exploring the Maghreb region of Africa.  You will focus on two aspects of Maghreb culture:

1) Unique elements of Maghreb culture.

2) French cultural influence and interaction with Maghreb culture.

Your job will be to COLLECT information from the pages, and then ANALYZE the information you have collected using the questions on the "Evaluation" tab.  I have given you guidelines on the "Process" page to walk you through the collection process, and I will be circulating throughout the classroom to keep an eye on your progress and answer any questions.

Bon voyage!

Task

First of all, you will start the COLLECTION phase, which will take the majority of the class period.

You will be collecting information on four different topics related to the Maghreb region:

1) WHAT IS THE MAGHREB?

 2) HOW IS THE MAGHREB RELATED TO FRANCE?

 3) WHAT ARE MAJOR ART FORMS IN THE MAGHREB?

 4) WHAT DOES FASHION LOOK LIKE IN THE MAGHREB?

On the "Process" page, each of these will be listed with individual topics you need to research and sites on which you can find the information.  Please keep a notebook open beside you and write out your research as you go.

Process

1) WHAT IS THE MAGHREB?

Please jot down some notes related to the following topics:

-The location of the Maghreb

Evaluation

This is where you ANALYZE the information you have collected.  Please answer these in complete sentences on a separate sheet of paper, using at least 3-5 sentences.

1. From your observation of the timelines, you know how long the North African Maghreb has been politcally independent from France.

Why, then, do you think that France and the Maghreb still share so much culture?

**To answer this question, think about both the cultural ties they developed over the years and their geographic closeness.

2. France is historically Christian (Catholic) and the Maghreb is historically Muslim.  How does that affect the relationship between the two countries?

**Consider the immigration debates and the veil debates that go along with that when you write your answer.

-----------------------------

We will discuss the following question in class following the WebQuest completion.  For now, please just pick a side and choose FOUR pieces of information from the texts that support your conclusion.

Some people argue that the Muslim influence in France is unfortunate, but others believe it is natural.  Which of the following is true?

-France needs to close its borders, because there is too much potential for conflict when the two different cultures mix together.
-France and the Maghreb share a history already, and the blending of the cultures is natural and cannot be avoided.
