Introduction
The purpose of this WebQuest is to learn about and be able to explain how the Doppler Effect changes the perceived frequency of light emitted by objects in space. We've already studied the Doppler Effect on sound waves, but it affects light waves very similarly. Understanding the Doppler Effect for light is fundamental to understanding how we know the universe is expanding, as well as the age of the universe.
Task
1. Watch and take notes on the following video by Doc Physics on the Doppler Effect for light.
2. Read the section titled "The Doppler Effect" in 16.2 in your text book. Add any information that's in addition to what you saw in the video.
3. Read and take notes on the following HubbleSite FAQ regarding the universe's age and size.
4. Complete the mini-quiz questions on this Google Form.
5. Prepare a slides presentation on the Doppler Effect, the age of the universe and universe expansion.
Evaluation
You are to create a 3 slide presentation for class on the following concepts:
1) What is the Doppler Effect for light? Include the equation and how it works.
2) How do we know the universe is expanding? Link this to information on the Doppler Effect.
3) How do we know the age of the universe? Link this to information on the Doppler Effect.
This presentation is worth 30 points, 10 per slide.
