Rockin' Rock Hounds!

Introduction

Introduction

Hello, let me introduce myself. I am Rocky the Rock Hound. I am on a mission to find different types of rocks and figure out where they came from. I am going to need your help. We will need to work together as a team to gather the information. Your teacher will help guide you through the Rock hound hunt. Welcome aboard fellow Rock hounds.

Task

Task

You are a Rock Hound looking for different types of rocks to collect. By the end of this WebQuest, you and your teammates will be able to:

  • describe the rock cycle
  • name three different types of rocks
  • explain how each type of rock is formed
  • describe the physical characteristics of different types of rocks
  • give an example of where you can find different types of rocks

What types of rocks are you going to find?

Process

Let's Get Started!

Day 1 You will work in groups of three and all Rock Hound teammates will research the rock cycle using the links below. Make sure you complete the Rock Cycle worksheet and glue it in your notebooks.

Day 2 When your group finishes the worksheet, you are going to create a poster-sized diagram of the Rock Cycle.

Day 3 and 4  Now that you have learned about the rock cycle, it's your job to become an expert on one type of rock. The three types of rocks are igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary. Each team member will research one type of rock. For example, if you choose igneous rock, you will only complete the section below under igneous rock. You will write down the answers to all your questions.  When you're finished you'll share information with your Rock Hound teammates. Let's begin Rock Hounds!

Igneous Rock

Explore these websites and answer these questions in your science notebook:

  • Where does igneous rock come from?
  • How is igneous rock formed?
  • How can you identify an igneous rock?
  • What are some examples of igneous rock?
  • Can you find igneous rock where you live?
  • What can igneous rock be used for?
