Poe and "The Tell Tale Heart"

Introduction

This WebQuest will take you on a journey through the life and selected works of the master of Gothic Horror, Edgar Allan Poe. Stories include "The Tell-Tale Heart," which is accompanied by a reading guide to help with details and comprehension.  After reading, students will examine the difference between Tone and Mood. Students will also participate in an ongoing discussion with one another using Twiducate as their medium.  The unit will culminate with students familiarizing themselves with Toneand Mood, and composing a Flash Fiction short story of their own.

Task

Task 1: Create a "Poe Webquest" folder in Drive and share with me.

Task 3: BrainPop-Edgar Allan Poe Biography Video, Quiz, and Worksheet.

Task 4: Read "The Tell-Tale Heart." Fill out the corresponding Reading Guide.

Task 5: Create a Crossword Puzzle for the vocabulary words in "The Tell Tale Heart."

Task 6: Edgar Allan Poe Twiducate Discussion

Task 7: Watch the BrainPop video on Tone vs. Mood. Take the quiz and record your score.

Task 8: Flash Fiction Short Story-Tone vs. Mood

Process

Task 1: In your Assignment Dropbox folder in Google Drive, create a new folder titled "Poe Webquest." This will automatically share the folder with me since your assignment dropboxes have been shared. Task 2: Journal Prompt. On the attached Google form at the bottom of this page, respond to the prompt in complete sentences.  Think about personal experiences or instances that help relate to the prompt. Your response should be between 6 and 8 sentences long. 

Task 3: Watch the bio video of Edgar Allan Poe here and fill out the Biography Worksheet at the bottom of this page. The username and password for the video are available at the top of the bio worksheet. Then take the Quiz associated with the video and record your score at the top of your worksheet. The Biography Worksheet document is listed at the bottom of the page. You need to make a copy of the document in order to be able to edit it.

 ***Benchmark #1 (10 pts): Tasks 1-3 should be done by the end of the day on Wed. Oct. 1st***  Task 4: Watch the video for "The Tell Tale Heart" and read the story. A copy of the story is located in the Resource Folder. The audiobook is also available at the bottom of this Webquest. While you read the story, fill out the corresponding reading guide located at the bottom of the Webquest.Task 5: Create a crossword puzzle for the vocabulary words from "The Tell Tale Heart."  The list is located in the resource folder, and the crossword puzzle maker is located here. After you have created your puzzle, trade with a neighbor and complete each other's puzzle.  When you have completed your puzzle, raise your hand and I will check this task off. **Benchmark #2 (10 pts): Tasks 4-5 should be done by the end of the day on Thurs. October 2nd** Task 6: I have created a Twiducate account and have added all of you to it. This format is similar to Twitter and Facebook and is very user friendly. You have already been added to Twiducate and assigned a password. After you get logged on, you can post as you would on Twitter or Facebook. You can assign yourself an avatar and a text color. You can comment on other's posts by clicking on the Thought/Speech Bubble next to the person's name at the bottom of their post, or you can pose a new thought or question. This is not a place to post unrelated questions or comments. If your posts are not focused, on topic, or are unrelated to the stories, you will forfeit your participation on this portion of the Webquest.  Here's how to post:

  • Log on to Twiducate using the login number assigned to you.
  • Post away!!!
  • Twiducate will be open until Sunday, Oct. 5th.  You must post AT LEAST THREE TIMES between Tuesday, Sept. 30th and Sunday, Oct. 5th.

***This is an ongoing Task.  You should be posting AT LEAST ONCE A DAY*** Task 7: Watch the BrainPop video on Tone vs. Mood located here. After you watch the video, take the quiz. Raise your hand when you have completed the quiz and I will come and record your score.  

Task 8: Create a new document in your "Poe Webquest" folder and name it: last name_FlashFiction.  Write a Flash Fiction story (less than 500 words) that mimics the tone and mood of "The Tell Tale Heart." Watch the video below to help you understand what Flash Fiction is. Remember, you only have 500 words to work with, so choose carefully and concisely the words that are going to help best convey the tone of your story. Task 9: Double check your Webquest to make sure you have the following completed: 1) Edgar Allan Poe Biography worksheet, 2) Reading Guide for "The Tell Tale Heart," 3) Vocabulary Crossword Puzzle, 4) Twiducate participation, 5) BrainPop quiz on Tone/Mood, 6) Flash Fiction story. The Webquest should be completed NO LATER THAN 5pm on Sunday, October 5th.
