: the use of science in industry, engineering, etc., to invent useful things or to solve problems

: a machine, piece of equipment, method, etc., that is created by technology

Technology is so much a part of our lives that we take for granted its true meaning. Mathematics is the language of science and thus used to solve problems as stated in the definition above. We also use the term to define devices or the actual piece of equipment. Electronic devices, computers, plasma televisions, LCD screens are all examples of technology that we utilize for help with problems or entertainment.

This WebQuest will walk you through some of the technology that is available to assist you in your 6th grade math experience.

Task

You are wanting to make some extra cash this school year as a math tutor. You need every resource possible to make your side job successful.

You will need to familirize yourself with the math text and the on-line resource http://my.hrw.com.

You will complete a check list that you can utilze throughout the school year.

Process

Take a brief tour of the website. Explore the three tabs at the top of the page.

Click the Book Pages tab. In the page number box type CC30. Answer Week 23, Day 2 question. How could you use this feature in your new business?
Click on the white drop down bar at the top of the web page. You will see 2 side by side followed by the word GO! in a red oval. Select Chapter 1. Click through the resources on the left side. What would you select as your top 3 most useful resources?
Click on the last tab, Videos & Activites. View a Video, make note of the features you see. How could this be helpful?
Select an activity on Interactives section under the same tab. Complete an activity of your choice. Rate the activity based on a 4 star rating and justify your rating.
Select a tool and try it out. How could this be helpful to the student you are tutoring?

Evaluation

Create a flyer for your group advertising your Tutoring Business. Now that you have this website as a resource, list your specialties. What will you offer to better serve your student. Do not forget to add times and fees. Be creative and catchy!

Conclusion

Thank you for your hard work on this WebQuest. You may not actully start a tutoring business this year, but I hope you see the potential to help yourself. And hey, you never know...I may have a 6th grader next year that would need an actual tutor!
