Introduction
Everyday you classify. Think about it. Sorting objects and putting them into specific places is classification! It's a way of organizing our world. Do you have a sock drawer in your dresser? How about a cabinet in your kitchen for storing cups and saucers? Do you collect baseball cards or stamps? If you do you have to organize them in some kind of order. That's classifying.
Animals too are classified in a variety of ways. This helps scientists to study the relationships in animal groups and to see the whole animal family tree as it has developed through time. Animals are found everywhere. We give names to each kind and we divide them into groups. Animals that have backbones are called vertebrates. We divide these animals into five groups: amphibians, birds, fish, mammals, and reptiles. Have you ever asked "What makes a bird a bird, or a reptile a reptile?
In this quest you will learn the answers to these questions and more
Task
You will be creating an animal classification power point presentation. Your presentation will include animals from each of the five groups of vertebrates. Your presentation will also include a definition of each type of animal and at least one example of an animal in each classification.
You will work by yourself to produce your power point presentation and the work must be in your own words.
Process
Part 1
First, scientists classify objects as to whether they are living or non-living. For this webquest we are only going to deal with living things, so look at the pictures below and sort these living things in a way that makes sense to you.

Part 2
Now to make your power point.
Using a new slide for each of the 5 animal groups which you can get the names of from the following website
For each animal group you need the following on your power point slide
- Examples of animals e.g. dog, cat, tiger etc
- Features that make them similar to each other but different to any other group
- Pictures
Evaluation
We will score you using the following matrix 3 points max for each slide with a maximum total of 15 marks
