Task

These are the materials you will need to make and paint your thanksgiving turkey

Materials

  • 12″ x 18″ piece of sulphite paper
  • black oil pastels
  • colored oil pastels
  • liquid watercolor paint
  • craft feathers
  • white glue
  • small plastic container lid.

Process

Instructions

  1. Fold paper in half to achieve a crease line and place container template on top of the crease line. This helps not only center the turkey but sets the stage for the turkey’s size.
  2. Trace container top with a black oil pastel.
  3. Draw two dots for eyes and an upside down triangle for a beak.
  4. Place oil pastel on crease line right next to the head and draw a BIG, FAT belly. Go all the way around to the other side of the head.
  5. Draw a turkey neck under the head.
  6. Add two legs by drawing two straight lines connected by claws.
  7. Now draw the tail feathers. Start by drawing a straight line above the head and go all the way to the top of the paper.
  8. Draw a big curved line around the line. Repeat around the sides of the body until you have as many tail feathers as you desire.
  9. With colored oil pastels, add lines, dots and patterns to the tail feathers and even to the body.
  10. Painting the turkey is easy with liquid watercolor paints. Put paint into jars.
  11. Paint each area or shape with a color of paint.
  12. When the children finished painting, add some white glue to the top of the head and allow each child to place a craft feather on the head.

Evaluation

There is no rubric or evaluation for this art project.

Conclusion

Not all the thanksgiving turkeys will look the same or even like turkeys. Many Kindergartener's have a very hard time with shapes and lines. It’s not only hard to control their fingers but most often they don’t connect the shapes with an object like a turkey. A lot of them turn out looking strange, but kinda cute. Once all the turkeys are done and dry then hang them around the room to broadcast the students work to the whole class.
