Introduction
We have spent a few weeks in class discussing and working on different ecology-related digital notebooks and some natural disasters that happen throughout the various regions of the United States, both from the worksheets and by doing the "Balanced Biosphere" group project. Today, we get to complete research and determine a way to help prevent those types of natural hazards/disasters from negatively impacting humans as much as possible. As you work, please make sure you pay attention to the questions asked on your graphic organizer (linked below)! This is what you will use to take notes and begin to think of the best solutions for reducing the impact of natural hazards.

Task
First, read this article (linked below) about different natural disasters. This will give you an idea of how you may be able to help reduce the effects of the hazards! Please choose TWO (three for extra credit) of these natural hazards from the list: Earthquake, Flood, Tsunami, or Wildfire. You may choose only one from the list at a time. Once you choose, please read over your section carefully to learn more information about how these hazards occur. Understanding them will better help you prepare for how to combat them.
Process
Now that you have your natural hazard chosen and you have begun thought-showering ideas for reducing the impact it has on humans, I want you to be able to see if you can determine the best way to save this town! Use this link: https://www.stopdisastersgame.org/#1540393288105-457a25c1-59a6 to test out your skills in preparing for natural disasters!
Please play the game fully and make sure you pay attention to your hazard risk! Use the hazard risk to determine if your solutions may not work out as well as you had planned, or if there is a solution you had not thought of that might work better!
Play the game made for the hazard you have already picked.

You have prepared for natural hazards and have designed solutions to help create a less drastic impact on humans settled in the area! Fantastic job! Before you go, please remember to complete this Google Form, which tells me about and helps me know what you discovered through this simulator process!
Conclusion
Congratulations on completing your WebQuest today! Keep thinking about the solutions you worked with today, because tomorrow we will put your best solutions to the test!

Teacher Page
Our WebQuest for today was based on MS Science Standard related to, "Generate and compare multiple solutions to reduce the impacts of natural Earth-process on humans."
Our Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCIs) for today are: "A variety of natural hazards result from natural processes. Humans cannot eliminate natural hazards but can take steps to reduce their impacts." and "Testing a solution involves investigating how well it performs under a range of likely conditions. "
This WebQuest is meant to first help us (students) see the impact that natural hazards have had on humans, and then determine the best ways we can prevent those hazards from having such a lasting impact!
