Introduction
Good morning class!
Your job for the next 5 weeks is to pretend you are a designer for a client, Mr. Johns. You will need to complete the below tasks to help inform and justify your design decisions. At the end of the 5 weeks, you will share your design with the class!
The Brief
As an aspiring Architect, a client has come to you to ask for your help creating an initial design for a small block of land they own in Mayfield. The block is 300m2 (30m long x 10m wide). Mr Johns has many requirements for the design of the house that he would like to be met. The requirements are:
- Mr Johns is family-oriented man and would like to ensure that whenever he has family stay, they always have a room to sleep in. Currently, Mr Johns lives with his wife and two children. His mother is currently sick too, meaning he is expecting her to move in with them soon. He would like her to have her own space if she is to move in. For ease of access for his Mum, he would prefer to not have a two-storey house. He also has his sister and sister's husband stay a couple of nights a month which he would like accommodated in the design.
- He would like the house design to be very open and make the best use of sunlight that it can, but also still be insulated enough for the colder months.
- He would like there to be a focus on natural flora as he enjoys taking care of gardens.
- He owns a motorbike and kayaks that he does not want to be kept in the house (HINT a shed in the backyard could be handy!)
- He has a grand piano that he would like to have a separate place in the house, but still can be heard in the main living area
Task
Task One
What are the main design considerations you must take to meet the requirements of Mr. John’s design brief?
Task Two
Find 3 precedents on Google that you would like to incorporate into your house design. Find an image (or sketch one) aand list two key reasons you have chosen this precedent.
Task Three
Start doing some sketches of your design ideas for this project. Sketches should include floor plans, 3D views, elevations, sections. This is completely up to you! Take a photo of 4 of your sketches that you believe are most relevant and show to your teacher for some feedback.
Task Four
Do final drawings of:
- Initial Design Sketches
- Floor Plan
- Elevations
- Sections
- One 3D Drawing
Process
To submit this work, upload photos of your work a Dropbox folder and share the link with your teacher.
Evaluation
Your task will be evaluated when presenting to the class at the end of Week 5!
You will be marked on:
- How well you consider and describe in detail factors that affect the design of the house and present the relevant design drawings in high detail
- How well you explain and describe the reasoning for your design solution and how their precedents influenced their decisions
- How well you communicate your design ideas clearly and concisely
Conclusion
Congratulations class on your amazing house designs for Mr. Johns! I'm sure he would be very happy to have any of you design his house!!
