Hi this web quest will be about figurative language and punctuation. We see fig language and punctuation in our everyday lives, if we didn’t have them sentences would be boring and makes sentences and words more understandable.
Onomatopoeia
Onomatopoeia is the formation of a word, as cuckoo or boom, by imitation of a sound made by or associated with what it is referring to
E.g. “Bark Bark!” went the dog as he chased the car that vroomed past.
Personification
Personification is the attribution of a personal (human) nature or character to inanimate objects or abstract nouns.
E.g. The sun opened its sleepy eyes and smiled down on the earth as a new day began.
Oxymoron
Oxymoron is a figure of speech in which a pair of opposite or contradictory terms are used together to emphasis.
E.g. organized chaos, same difference.
Paradox
Paradox is a statement or preposition, which is self-contradictory, unreasonable or illogical.
E.g.This statement is a lie.
Hyperbole
Hyperbole is a figure of speech, which uses an extravagant or exaggerated statement to express strong feelings.
E.g. they had been walking so long John thought he might drink the entire lake when they came upon it.
Metaphor
Metaphor is a figure of speech containing an implied comparison, in which a word or phrase ordinarily and primarily used of one thing is applied to another.
E.g. Life is a rollercoaster.
Simile
A simile is a rhetorical figure expressing comparison or likeness that directly compares two objects through some connective words.
E.g. As happy as a dog with two tails.
Extended metaphor
Extended metaphor is a metaphor that is continued over multiple sentences.
E.g. Suzie is a beautiful young flowering girl. Her cheeks are flush with the spring of life. She has the fragrance of youth about her.
Allusion
Allusion is a reference to a famous character or event.
E.g. Like Hercules, he is so strong.
Full stops
A full stop is a dot that you put at the end of a sentence to finish it.
E.g. Hi my name is bob.
Commas
A comma is a dot with a tail and when you put it in a sentence it’s a take a breath point.
E.g. This morning I was tired, so I drunk coffee.
Semi-colons
Like commas and full stops they mark the places where you would pause when speaking.
A colon is placed before a list of words, phrases or clauses.
E.g. My list: pineapple, apple and cake.
Brackets
Brackets are curved lines that you put in a sentence that cuts out words and still makes sense.
E.g. My (V8) car is really fast.
