Introduction
Figurative language is a very important part of our writing. It can make our writing more interesting and exciting. In class we have learnt a lot of the simple figurative language like similes and metaphors but we haven’t learnt any of the complex figurative language like allegory and assonance. By the end of this web quest you will have learnt some complex figurative language.
Task
Your task for this web quest is to learn allegory, apostrophe, assonance, idiom, metonymy and symbolism using the links you have been given. Then write a four-stanza haiku using the figurative language you have just learnt. Note: each stanza must use a different type of figurative language. The finished product should have a proper haiku layout (5 syllables, 7 syllables, 5 syllables), each stanza should have a different type of figurative language and the figurative language should be used properly. The process on the next page will help you do this. if you finish early you can do the two words below as an extention. here are there definitions and examples:
synecdoche:
definition- a part of something represents the whole or it may use a whole to represent a part. Synecdoche may also use larger groups to refer to smaller groups or vice versa. It may also call a thing by the name of the material it is made of or it may refer to a thing in a container or packing by the name of that container or packing.
example-
- The word “suits” refers to businessmen.
- The word “boots” usually refers to soldiers.
- The term “coke” is a common synecdoche for all carbonated drinks.
- “Pentagon” is a synecdoche when it refers to a few decision makers.
- The word “glasses” refers to spectacles.
- “Coppers” often refers to coins.
understatement:
definition-An understatement is a figure of speech employed by writers or speakers to intentionally make a situation seem less important than it really is.
example-“Deserts are sometimes hot, dry and sandy” while describing deserts of the world.
He is not too thin” while describing an obese person.
“It rained a bit more than usual” while describing an area being flooded after heavy rainfall.
