Introduction
Figurative language:
Figurative language is used to make our writing more interesting to read and it gives a meaning of excitment to it.
Metaphors; metaphors are applied to something that isn’t literal;
E.g. “She was a rose.”
Simile; similes are directly showing resemblance;
E.g. “He eats so messily, he is like a pig.”
Allusion; an allusion compares something to a famous character or event;
E.g. “Like Hercules, he is so strong.”
Onomatopia; onomatopia is how a sound is written;
E.g. “Woof woof.”
Personification; personification is giving an inanimate object a human aspect;
E.g. “As the Sun rose above the hill it smiled at the world.”
Oxymoron; an oxymoron is when the speech contradicts itself;
E.g. “The place was humming with activity people were running around every where but all on schedule and all in place it was organized chaos.”
Punctuation:
Punctuation is used to help understand our writting easily it helps create a sence of an organised text. It is there so the words aren't just a big blurr.
Colons; colons are very useful and are used before a list of words, phrases or clauses.
E.g. “I am going shopping and I will get some: Bananas, apples, cake and a carrot.”
Semicolons; semi colons are not as strong as colons and can be used in different parts of speech such as where a full stop could go to join to complete sentences.
E.g. “Unicorns are really pretty.” “I like their big glittery horn.”
Joining them with a semicolon
“Unicorns are really pretty; I like their big glittery horn.”
Brackets; brackets are used to add extra information and if the brackets and the knowledge inside is taken out the sentence still make sense.
E.g. “Whales are different to sharks (as shown on previous page) the whale breaths air with their lungs while sharks have gills.”
Take out the brackets the sentence still makes sense
“Whales are different to sharks the whale breaths air with their lungs while sharks have gills.”
Dashes; a dash can show interruption repetition or can add extra news like brackets;
E.g. "This is my" - "sister" interupted John "she looks just like you."
Hyphens; a hyphen is used to combine two words;
