The Water Cycle

Introduction

Its amazing how water travels in a cycle and can be used over and over. Do you know what this process is called? Ok let me tell you what this process is called.This process is called the Water cycle, this is the journey water takes as it circulates from the land to the sky and back again.We all know that there is water and the sun and we know that the sun can evaporate water. But where does the water go after it is evaporated by the sun? It can't just disappear and never come back if that happened we would have no water left on the planet. Did you know that the water is actually being recycled? Water is constantly moving above, on, and below the surface of earth. It is your job to find out where the water goes after it is evaporated by the sun. You will need to find out the different parts of the water cycle and how each part contributes to the overall process of the water cycle.

Task

We all know that water is an important part of our planet. We know that water is used for a number of different reasons but do we really know how water is being moved around the earth? and what process water goes through to make it all happen? After this webquest you will find out a wide variety of information on the different steps of the water cycle and how these steps come together to create the water cycle. Once you have read this webquest you will become more educated about the water cycle and can be able to sure this information or what you have learnt to others. You will each be placed in a group and then be given group names after the processes in the water cycle such as Evapouration, Condensation, Precipitation and Collection. Each group will then work together and gather information about their group's name then draw and label a picture showing their process. The picture should be very attractive and neatly done so others can easily understand the concept you are trying to bring across. For example, if your group's name is Condensation you can draw a picture of some dark clouds pouring rain to symbols this process and to show that water vapours in the air is getting cold and changes back into liquid. At the end of this task each group will share their information about their particular process. After each group has finished presenting each group will then be given a water cycle paper to fill in the blanks by writing each process in the water cycle where they belong. However, the group that finishes first will be rewarded for being the top science group of the day. Now get ready for an adventure around the earth surface to see the amazing process of the water cycle.

  1. Watch the video below about the water cycle to gain a better understanding to what you already know about the water cycle and also to visual image of the processes in this cycle.
  2. After watching such an interesting video about the water cycle let's take some time out to think about the journey of water. First the sun evaporated him, next he turned into a cloud because of condensation, which turns water vapor back into water, and then he turned into precipitation and fell as rain back to the earth, lastly collection happened and the little water droplet fell back onto the earth into the ocean, rivers, and lakes on land.
  3. After watching the water cycle video you will then each play a water cycle game by placing the processes in the right order.
  4. Next you will visit three websites that will help you find more information for your group activity about the different processes.
  5. The first website below goes over each step and has a picture to help you think about the different steps in the water cycle.
  6. The second website below will give you a lot of fun facts that you can add to your group activity.
  7. The third website below will challenge your water cycle skills by giving you harder vocabulary words that describe the water cycle to really test yourself take the vocabulary quiz and see if you can figure out some of the new word meanings.
  8. After you have found all of your information by visiting these websites you will then be split up into your separate groups. The team names are Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation, and Collection.
  9. After being split up into your groups each group will then draw a picture of their group name or process that they have been given then label and write information about this process. You should also make your picture very creative and appealing to the eyes and also add a fun fact that you have learned from one of the websites.
  10. Lastly each group can share the information that they have written with the rest of their classmates and then each group will get the chance to be the top science group for that day!

In order to get the best score on this project you will have to follow all of the instructions listed below.

* Use class time wisely

* Have visited all of the websites listed

* Used information from these websites for your group activity

* Were a good listener when it comes on to listening to your group members' ideas

* Added a hand drawn picture to your group activity that was relevant to your process

* Had your team name neatly written at the top

* The information written on your group activity was correct for your water cycle process

* Present to the class

Evaluation rubric:

Poor Developing Very Good Outstanding Score
Students used their class research time appropriately and contributed to the team poster board. Students did not use their time effectively and put zero effort into the project. Did no contribute to team poster board. The students used some of their time on their project research. Contributes little to team poster board. The student got off track at times when looking for project research. Contributed sometimes to team poster board The student used all of their time on their project and a lot of effort was put into helping contribute to their team's poster board. 1/4
Met all of the team poster board criteria. The team did not meet any of the poster board criteria. They did not have the team name at the top, or any information listed, a hand drawn picture, or a fun fact. The team had their team name at the top and information listed but they did not have a picture or a fun fact on their step in the water cycle. The team had the team name at the top, information listed, and a hand drawn picture. But they forgot to list a fun fact. The team remembered all of the criteria for the poster. The team name, information, hand drawn picture, and fun fact. 1/4
All of the information on their water cycle step was correct and their picture was relevant to their step. All of teams poster boards information was incorrect and their picture was not relevant to their step. Some of the teams information on their poster board was correct and their picture was relevant to their step but not drawn neatly. Mostly all of the teams information on their poster board was correct and their picture was relevant and neatly drawn. All of the teams information on their poster board was correct and their picture was relevant to their step in the water cycle and it was very neatly drawn. 1/4

Total Score: /16
Conclusion

Congratualtion! You and your classmates have successfully completed the class activity and are now water cycle experts. You all have gone above and beyond in finding out information about the water cycle by watching a video playing a game and then finding further information about each process in the cycle. You have all worked together in groups in becoming top science experts on the water cycle and you were able to share information about your process in the water cycle with your entire classmates. At the end you were all able to correctly label each process in the water cycle and tell how each process works. This project shows that if you put time and effort into finding information on new things you will be able to learn anything!

This webquest was designed to help students gain a better understandng of the water cycle. It allow students to work independently by finding information on their own as well as working together in groups. The first day students can watch the video and play the game and look at the 3 information sites. The next day students can meet in their respective groups to work together by drawing and writing information on their group picture of the given water cycle process. The third day can be spent by having students share their group's information with the class and as added fun they should work to best of their ability to become the top science group of that week.
