Task

Question 1: Multiple Choice (each question counts for 2 marks)

Circle the letter of the response that is most correct:

1. Interphase:

A) is the same as prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase

B) occurs before telophase but after anaphase

C) occurs before metaphase

D) is the phase during which DNA is replicated

2. In which stage of mitosis are the chromosomes moving towards the poles?

A) Prophase

B) Metaphase

C) Anaphase

D) Telophase

3. Cytokinesis:

A) is mitosis that takes place in plant cells only

B) requires the formation of cell plate in plant cells

C) is the division of the cytoplasm

4. The diploid number of chromosomes:

A) is the number represented by 2n

B) refers to the total number of chromosomes in both daughter cells

C) varies from cell to cell within the organism

Question 2: Provide the correct biological term for each of the following (each question counts for 2 marks)

1. Structure holding sister chromatids together after DNA  replication: _____________

2. Found at the poles of the cell during mitosis: ____________

3. Condensed chromatin: ____________

4. Division of the nucleus: _____________

5. Tubular fibres that chromosomes are attached to during metaphase: _____________

Question 3: Essay (15 marks)

Mitosis is the process in which a cell divides to form two identical daughter cells. Describe this process, making mention of the 5 phases involved in this process. Also remember to explain why this process is important and what it is  needed for. Your essay should be between 200-250 words. You should include your word count at the end of the essay.

Process

Below are 2 videos that explains the importance of mitosis, the process in which it occurs as well as the different phases of mitosis in depth. Please watch these videos before attempting to answer the questions:

After you have watched the 2 videos above, you can also watch this short clip as it is a fun and easy way to remember the different phases of mitosis.

Once you have watched all 3 videos, you should be able to complete the task successfully. I have also included some additional notes should the videos not be sufficient.

IMPORTANT TERMS:

  • Chromosome – structure in the cell that contains genetic material in the form of DNA.

  • Chromatids - two arms of a chromosome.

  • Centromere - section in the middle that joins the 2 chromatids.

  • Centriole – organelle in the cell that produces spindle fibre.

 PHASES OF MITOSIS

Phase

Explanation

1) Interphase

  • Cell is growing and getting ready to divide.

  • The DNA replicates

2) Prophase

  • Chromatin network of DNA shortens and thickens to form chromosomes.

  • Nuclear membrane and nucleolus disappear.

  • Spindle fibre forms as the centrioles move to opposite poles.

3) Metaphase

  • Chromosomes line up on the equator/middle of the cell.

4) Anaphase

  • Spindle fibre shortens and separate the chromosomes at the centromere.

  • Chromatids move to opposite poles.

5) Telophase

  • Nucleus and nucleolus forms again.

  • Spindle fibre disappears.

  • Chromosomes bundle up again to form the chromatin network.

  • Cleavage forms.

  • Cytokinesis takes place and 2 identical cells form.

Conclusion

The videos and notes should assist you with answering the questions. The essay will also be helpful for the exam as it is similar to exam style questions.

This activity is should be submitted on or before 20th September 2022.
