You have been hired by the United States Government to explore Missouri and create an informational brochure detailing each region of Missouri. Using your mapping skills, letter writing ability and creative genius effectively will allow you to earn $1,000.
Your ultimate goal: Create a poster enticing settlers to come to the magnificent land of Missouri.

During this activity you will be required to:
- Make several maps with differing information
- Write letters to settlers wishing to move to Missouri
- Create a poster that can be displayed telling all about Missouri.

MISSOURI MAPS
You will need to create maps of Missouri for settlers in the east so they can fully understand and visualize the structure of the land itself.
Complete the following steps to familiarize yourself with Missouri's regions.
1. Find, draw and label the two major rivers of Missouri.
2. Find, draw and label the following on your map
- The capital city of Missouri
- The River Confluence
- The oldest city in Missouri
- The largest city in Missouri
- The city Lewis and Clark began their journey from
- Biggest lake in Missouri(Hint: Nickname is "the Magic Dragon".)
- Highest point in Missouri
3. Explain in your words

Letters to Settlers
Whew! You did a lot of research and a lot of traveling. Now we need to get all that lovely information out to the public.
Your task: Alert the settlers to the wide range of opportunities in Missouri.
Use your maps and your notes to write a letter (one person in each group is in charge of a different region), enticing settlers to come to a particular region of Missouri. Be sure to tell the land forms of each region, ways to make a living and interesting aspects of each region.
Use the checklist in your folder to make sure you cover everything!

Are you ready to go on? Good! During this final process, you will be creating a poster for the Union to display to potential settlers.
- Plan your poster on paper for a rough draft.
- Things to include.
- Teaser (3 to 5 sentences)
- This is the inside front cover of your brochure. What are you going to write to make people want to know what's in your brochure? 3-5 sentences.
- Brief description of each region including:
- landforms
- ways to make a living
- interesting aspects of region
- Rivers: Mississippi and Missouri
- importance of rivers
- nicknames of rivers (include why those nicknames are appropriate)
- List of symbols
- Pick 5.
- Include what the symbols are (i.e. state flower is...)
- Include the date they became symbols
- Name of bordering/neighboring states and their location in relation to Missouri.
- Teaser (3 to 5 sentences)
- Things to include.
