 Can you define a proper noun?

What is a proper noun?

Learning objective:

By the end of this lesson, the students will be able to identify a proper noun in a story with text read aloud.

By the end of this lesson, the students can independently to write a sentence using  proper noun with capitalization.

Task

PowerPoint Presentation

  • As an entry assignment, students will be introduced to three pictured items that are nouns. A store name Walmart, a picture of a car, and a picture of me the teacher.  The students will be asked to name the items and indicate if it is a proper noun.
  • After seeing what they know, I will present to them the definition of the word proper noun.
  • Proper noun is a word that gives meaning to the noun with the use of a capital letter in the beginning, middle, or end of an entrance.
  • Examples of a proper noun are I would like to see the Science Museum in Washington, DC.
  • Examples of another proper noun I would like to see the National Children’s Museum in Washington DC.
  • After I explain to the students, I then do a group assignment to help them understand. Once 50 percent of the class understands it, I will have them work independently.
Process

1 For my students to work on a group project, I would break them into groups of four

 

2 Four students will work on the smart board and my other four students will watch a YouTube video on proper nouns the student will be on a 15-minute rotation.

 

3, Every student will be checked on to make sure they are understanding the activity.

 

4. Once the students have completed the lesson they will rotate to the proper noun matching game.

Conclusion

At the end of this lesson, I hope my students will learn proper nouns and how to use it in a sentence.
