Mission Renewable: Designing a Sustainable Energy Plan for Tomorrow

Introduction

Imagine you have just been hired as an Elite Environmental Consultant by the Global Energy Task Force. The fictional coastal city of Verdant Bay is facing a major energy crisis: its population is growing rapidly, but its primary energy source a coal-fired power plant is causing severe pollution, health issues, and high greenhouse gas emissions.

The City Council has given your team an ultimatum: Propose a transition to a 100% renewable energy system within 10 years, or face impending climate and power crises.

Will your team harness the wind, capture the sun, tap into geothermal heat, or utilize hydroelectric power? The future of Verdant Bay is in your hands!

Task

Working in teams of four, your team will research four major renewable energy sources: Solar, Wind, Hydroelectric, and Geothermal. Each member will adopt a specialist role to investigate one energy type.

Together, your team will create and deliver:

  1. A Sustainable Energy Proposal Slide Presentation (6–8 slides) summarizing your research, comparing energy options, and proposing a multi-source energy grid for Verdant Bay.
  2. An Energy Allocation Breakdown (Pie Chart or Graph) showing what percentage of Verdant Bay’s total power will come from each energy source and why.

 

Process

Step 1: Assign Roles

Divide your group of 4 into the following specialist roles:

Reconvene with your team to share findings and construct your final proposal:

  1. Compare Findings: Fill out a comparative matrix listing pros, cons, costs, and geographic needs for all 4 energy sources.
  2. Formulate the Plan: Decide the percentage breakdown of energy sources for Verdant Bay (e.g., 40% Solar, 30% Wind, 20% Hydroelectric, 10% Geothermal). Ensure your mix guarantees power even when it’s cloudy or calm (base-load vs. peak load).
  3. Build the Slide Deck:
