Inside the Human Body (Year 4)

Introduction

You are going to take an amazing journey through the human body. You will explore how your magnificent body functions from tip to toe. The first stop will be in your head. You will learn how your eyes, ears, nose and mouth allow you to be aware of your surroundings. Then, you will move to the heart and lungs followed by the digestive system. Finally, you will end your journey by learning about the muscles and bones. Prepare yourself to be completely fascinated by the workings of your amazing body.

Senses:  sight, smell, touch, taste and hearing.

 

  1. Approximately 150 million light-sensitive cells called rods and cones are found in the retina of your eye.  What are the functions of the rods and cones?  How are they different?

 

  1. The sense of smell is a chemical sense.  How many different smells can the average human distinguish?

 

  1. Humans have special nerve cells, called receptors, which allow us the sense of touch.  Which areas of our body are the most sensitive?

  1. What causes our heart to make the lub-dub sound?

 

  1. The human heart has two sides, which are separated by a thick muscular wall.  How many chambers are in our heart, and what are they called?

 

Digestive System:

 

  1. What are the main organs that make up the digestive system?

 

  1. Where and how does digestion start in your body?

 

  1. How do nutrients absorbed in the small intestine get into blood?

 

  1. What is the difference between the large intestine and the small intestine?

 

  1. Approximately how many hours does it take for the stomach to process a meal?

 

Muscles and Bones:

 

  1. What are the main functions of the skeletal system?

 

  1. What is the stretchy tissue that connects bones and muscles called?

 

  1. Muscles are divided into three groups.  What are they, and how do they differ?

 

  1. What is the difference between voluntary muscles and involuntary muscles?

 

  1. How many bones are in your foot and toes?
