Melting and Freezing
Melting and Freezing are both changes in state, that occur when liquid or a solid interchange. Melting is the process by which a solid changes to a liquid as the temperature increases. The point at which a solid material liquifies is called the melting point. On the other hand, freezing is the process by which a liquid turns into a solid. The point at which a liquid material solidifies is called the freezing point. An example of freezing is snowfall while an example of melting is ice to water. In the winter, many people find the snow beautiful, however, the ground is covered in ice and frost. As a result, huge machines spread grit on the road to melt the frost and ice to make it easier and safer for cars to travel. This coursework will explain why roads are grit in icy conditions.
Task
1.1 Task
When ice forms on a road, it makes the surface slippery, therefore, it's hard for the wheels on a car to grip onto the road surface. As a result, grit which is a type of salt that is brownish in colour and looks like a bit of gravel, is spread down to lower the freezing point of moisture on the road surface which prevents snow from sticking in the first place. Consequently, the moisture on the road mixes with the salt and creates a saline solution that prevents snow or ice from building up.
Process
1.2 Process
Gritting is effective because salt, which is known as sodium chloride, can make water stay liquid at temperatures below 0°C. Generally, water freezes at 0°C, however, when salt is used, it messes up the bonds between water molecules. As a result, it makes it more difficult for them to turn into solid ice. When grit is spread on icy roads, it forms a salty solution that covers the road. Consequently, this solution stops the water in the ice from becoming solid, so the road doesn’t get icy. The salt makes the freezing point of the solution lower, and therefore, it can keep the road from freezing even when it is really cold.
Conclusion
In conclusion, gritting doesn’t just stop ice, it is also helpful for removing snow.
