Background Knowledge about Technology: 3rd and 4th Graders

Introduction

This webquest is for 3rd and 4th grade students who already have a background in technology. The webquest will have several tabs containing information on background knowledge about technology. There will be a tab with a quiz that students can take that will ask them questions about technology to determine how advanced they are with technology and what they already know about it. This webquest can be used as a tool for teachers so they are able to see what their students know about technology, what kinds of technology they use on a daily basis, and what forms of technology they have used in school so far. This will show the teacher where they should begin in regards to technology. This webquest is also a learning tool for students because they can read about the different types of technology and gain knowledge about certain types of technology they may be unfamiliar with.

Task

Teachers will be able to see how much each of their students know about technology, and what sources of technology they have used before. The quiz will contain questions about Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. There will be questions about the use of ipads, tablets, phones, and computers. There will also be questions about white boards, projectors, clickers, poll everywhere, etc. This will show if the students are familiar with using these parts of technology, or if they are not familiar with parts of technology. The teacher may use the results from this quiz to decide which forms of technology he/she will use in the classroom. There will be information on different types of technology, such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. The students will be able to learn from this and use this knowledge in the classroom. Once the students are completed with the information throughout the WebQuest they will then create a PowerPoint on the information they learned through the WebQuest. The students will show what they learned throughout their PowerPoint that will discuss the information that the students learned. The students will then present their Power Points for the class.

Process

To complete this task the students will have to engage in this activity in the beginning of the year. The students will focus on the newest information that they are learning about, with this information they will then take the quiz that is on the WebQuest. Once the student is completed the WebQuest they will then create a PowerPoint about the information they found way new, interesting or useful. In their PowerPoint they will also show the skills that they learned about PowerPoint to create their own.

Conclusion

The students will become familiar with types of technology they may not have used before. They may learn something new about technology they were already familiar with, prior to using this webquest. Teachers will be able to see what the students in his/her class know about technology, and what they have not used before. This is very helpful for teachers to understand where his or her students are with knowledge of technology. There will be a place for students and teacher to post comments on the webquest with what they think could be added to the webquest to improve learning.
