Media Literacy - Genre - Codes and Conventions

Introduction

Have you ever seen a movie trailer? Can you recall memorable ones? What is your favorite movie trailer?

When you saw the trailers, did you immediately figure out what kind of film it is about? How were you able to do that?

Movie trailers are great platforms in showcasing different media codes and conventions. Let's learn more about them!

RUBRIC:

4 points: Written in extraordinary style and voice. Very informative and well organized.  No spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors.

3 points: Written in interesting style and voice.  Somewhat informative and organized. Few spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors.

2 points: Has little style or voice. Has new information but is poorly organized. A number of spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors.

1 point: No style or voice. No  new information and poorly organized. A lot of spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors.  

Conclusion

GENRE

  • comes from the French word, meaning “type” or “class”
  • can be recognized by its common set of distinguishing features (codes and conventions)
  • Media products can be classified into categories or genre
  • Horror, comedy, action comedy, sci-fi , action or drama are examples of genre in films
  • This is also applicable to TV shows
  • Genre appears in any medium

 

CODES are systems of signs, which create meaning

CONVENTIONS are the generally accepted ways of doing something

You were able to identify the genre of the films because of codes and conventions.

Media Language is comprised of codes, conventions, formats, symbols and narrative structures that indicate the meaning of media messages to an audience.
