Ancient Worlds

Introduction

The">http://youtu.be/WZuGKwGPVKQ]The amazing works of art and architecture known as the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World serve as a testament to the ingenuity, imagination and sheer hard work of which human beings are capable. They are also, however, reminders of the human capacity for disagreement, destruction and, possibly, embellishment. As soon as ancient writers compiled a list of “seven wonders,” it became fodder for debate over which achievements deserved inclusion. Ultimately, human hands joined with natural forces to destroy all but one of the wonders. Furthermore, it is possible that at least one of the wonders might not have existed at all. Still, all seven continue to inspire and be celebrated as the remarkable products of the creativity and skill of Earth’s early civilizations.

Task

As students you are going to work in groups to study, search information and  to write a research report about one of the old ancient worlds.

Your group will be assigned one of the following cultures to promote:

  • Mesopotamia
  • Ancient Egypt
  • Ancient China
  • Ancient India
  • Ancient Greece

Process

1. Brain storm the topic (ancient place) you want to research.

2. Decide on the main facts you want to research

Follow these steps carefully:

1. Your group should begin by dividing up the research tasks. Each student or pair of students within the group should gather information on one of the five cultures and share what is found with the rest of the group.

2. As you do your research, look for information which will help you answer the questions given to you in the worksheet. (Please keep track of where you got your information, take good notes, download some images, and give credit)

Conclusion

In acting as travel agents, and in evaluating the presentations of your classmates, you will have had the opportunity to compare and contrast and draw conclusions about the contributions of several ancient cultures.

Questions you should ask as a historian and a traveling agent--What various social, political, and economic patterns emerged in the ancient world? What accounts for the commonalities and differences in these patterns across civilizations? How did these civilizations relate and adapt to their environments? Their neighbors? How advanced were their technologies? And how can a study of civilizations long gone, their triumphs and their tragedies, inform our lives as citizens today?
