Introduction

Look is it over there, no it's over there, wait it's everywhere. You might ask what is everywhere, well matter is everywhere! In this WebQuest you will learn about, explore, and identify matter the three forms of matter called solid, liquid, and gas.

Task

Using the resources which are located in this WebQuest, your task is to learn and understand that there are different states of matter. Also being able to classify objects into the correct state of matter.

Process

Now it is time to get started exploring and learning about the states of matter.  During your journey, you will work independently using the resources that are included in this WebQuest and follow the instructions below.  To demonstrate your understanding you will be required to create a sorting activity which will include three state of matter labels and a deck of object (words or pictures) that fit into each group of matter.  Your sorting activity must also include an answer key.  The activity will be used for your fellow students to practice classify matter.

1.  Research your topic.  Using the website links and videos in this WebQuest learn about matter and the three most common states of matter.

2.  Annotating - As you learn about matter, take notes in you journal.  The purpose of your annotation, is to understand and be able to define and describe matter and the three states of matter.

  • Define matter
  • List the three most common states of matter as well as the identifying properties of each.
  • List examples of each state of matter

3.  Creating - Create your matter sorting activity using material in the room.  Remember that the purpose of your sorting activity is so that students can practice sorting and classifying object into the current category of matter.  Your sorting activity must contain the following items:

  • 3 Title Cards - The three states of matter. One name per title.
  • 12 -21 object cards - You must have an equal number of object cards for each state of matter.  \

For example 4 card for each title would equal 12 total object cards.

                                            Title #1                   Title #2                          Title #3

object card               object card                   object card

object card               object card                    object card

object card               object card                     object card

object card               object card                    object card

  • Answer Key - An answer key is a list of correct answers which can be used for students to check their answers and to help guide their understanding of the correct object classification.
