ALGEBRA INTRODUCTION TASK:
You have now been introduced to the topic of Algebra. You should now be aware of some terms and approaches used in this topic. To assist you in understanding I have created a compilation of questions with links to youtube videos and websites whereby specific things are being explained.
Watch the videos to help you complete the activities that follow to the best of your ability.

Process
Question 1: Identifying components of Algebraic Expressions
Watch the video entitled "Identifying Parts of an Expression..." answer the following questions based on the expression below:
2x³+4x²-5x-7y
- What is the value of the constant? (1)
- What is the value of the highest exponent? (1)
- What is the value of the co-efficient of x²? (1)
- What are the two variables in the expression? (2)
- Define what a variable is and what the purpose of it is. (2)
- Create an expression using various Mathematics symbols and components (exponents, variables, etc.). (1)
[8 marks]
Question 2: Adding Like and Unlike terms
Watch the videos entitled "Intro to combining like terms..." and "Addition of Unlike Terms..." simplify the following expressions by adding like terms:
- 2m+5m+6-m-2 (2)
- 4s+s+t+t-5s-2t (2)
- 5h²+7h-2h²-7h+h (2)
- c³+c²+4c+2c²-c³+10c-10c³ (3)
- What have you noticed in the previous question? (1)
- Create your own algebraic expression where like and unlike terms are being combined. (2)
[12 marks]
Question 3: Multiplying Like and Unlike terms
Watch the video entitled"Adding and Multiplying Like Terms.." and "Multiplication of Algebraic Expressions..." and simplify the following expressions:
- h×h×h×h×h (1)

Conclusion
When identifying components of an expression remember: (classified by bold print)
- Term: -23xy⁴
- Co-efficient: -4yz
- Variable: 54d²
- Exponent: -6h³
When adding expressions remember:
- LIKE TERMS: terms with the same variables and exponent, e.g. 2x and -5x
- UNLIKE TERMS: terms with different variables and exponents, e.g. 4x and 6y
- Like terms can be combined, added or subtracted
- Unlike terms cannot be combined, added or subtracted.
When multiplying expressions remember:
- Separate numbers from variables.
- Multiply numbers normally.
- Multiply variables, by adding the exponents of the same variables.
- e.g. (2)(x)(x)(y)= 2x²y
