What is Probability ?

Probability is the branch of mathematics concerning numerical descriptions of how likely an event is to occur, or how likely it is that a proposition is true. The probability of an event is a number between 0 and 1, where, roughly speaking, 0 indicates impossibility of the event and 1 indicates certainty.

Below is a basic video explaining basic probability and what it is all about this content will allow for more knowledge on probability.

Task

Below are a few questions that you will need to do.

1. Two coins are tossed 500 times, and we get:

    Two heads : 105 times

    One head : 275 times

    No head : 120 times

Find the probability of each event to occur.

2. One card is drawn from a deck of 52 cards, well-shuffled. Calculate the probability that the card will

    (i) be an ace,

    (ii) not be an ace.

3. Consider the experiment of rolling a die. Let A be the event ‘getting a prime number’, B be the event                         ‘getting an odd number’. Write the sets representing the events

   (i) A or B

   (ii) A and B

   (iii) A but not B

   (iv) ‘not A’.

4. A coin is tossed three times, consider the following events.

    P: ‘No head appears’,

Q: ‘Exactly one head appears’ and

R: ‘At Least two heads appear’.

Check whether they form a set of mutually exclusive and exhaustive events.

5. Two players, Sangeet and Rashmi, play a tennis match. The probability of Sangeet winning the match is                    0.62. What is the probability that Rashmi will win the match?

Process

Step 1

  •  Read and understand what probability is.
  •  Use media provided for better understanding of basics of probability.
  • Click on the Video to watch it.

Step 2

  • Go through the content on probability.
  • Revise the content.
  • Practice probability.

Step 3

  • Complete the activity given and try and answer all questions.
  • complete answers on a separate page and then scan in your answers.
  • Show all your calculations.
  • include your name, surname and which grade.

Step 4

Step 5

  • You will then receive your marks via a spreadsheet.
  • We will then have a zoom meeting where we will go through the answers.

Conclusion

In this topic we have discussed the basics of probability as well as how to calculate in different situations.

So with covering the calculations we can see the different outcomes, as well as you have noticed that probability can be used in basically everything such as sport events, races, rolling a dice and flipping a coin.

So as you all can see that probability is an everyday mathematical skill.

This lesson has now given you the knowledge and has equipped you with the necessary skills on how to calculate probability.

I chose this lesson so that i can show my students how mathematics is used in daily in different life situations.

Every person is viewed as a number or numbers therefore all life activities will require one to use some mathematical skills. The lesson will help my students to make good and positive life decisions because this teaches them how to weigh out different situation.
