Math Detectives: Solving Addition Mysteries

Introduction

Welcome, Math Detectives! Today you will become problem solvers and use your addition skills to solve fun math mysteries. You will work with yourteam to find clues, solve number problems, and create a colorful math poster.

Task

Students will work in small groups to solve addition mystery problems. Each group will create a colorful math poster using poster board, paper, crayons, drawings, and numbers to show how they solved the problems.

Their poster must include:

  • The addition problems
  • Pictures or drawings
  • Number sentences
  • An explanation of how they found the answers

At the end, groups will share their posters with the class.

Process

Step 1: Form Groups

Students will work in groups of 3.

Step 2: Assign Roles

  • Problem Solver — solves the equations
  • Recorder — writes answers and explanations
  • Designer — creates visuals and decorations

Step 3: Practice Addition

Step 4: Solve the Mysteries

Groups will solve teacher-provided addition mystery cards.

Example:

  • Mia found 7 shells at the beach. Then she found 5 more. How many shells does she have now?

Step 5: Work Together

Students will work with their group to:

  • Solve the addition problems
  • Draw pictures to match the problems
  • Check each other’s answers
  • Help decorate the final poster

This makes it much simpler and better for 1st grade students.
