Math in Baseball

Introduction

You are probably aware of the math that goes into baseball and softball, it can be used in complex ways for statistics, or it can be used in simpler ways through the scoreboard. In this WebQuest, we will be using the basic math that goes into a scoreboard to find out the winner of the game.

Task

For this WebQuest, you must watch the video below on manual scoreboards and this one specifically is about one of the oldest manual scoreboards left.

With a manual scoreboard, you must add the runs scored for each inning of the game up to get the final score for each team. For the following task, you must use your addition skills to add those numbers and find out the final score for each team on our scoreboard.

Evaluation

Once you have your scores on a sheet of paper, you will get into groups of 5 and evaluate the scores you got. As a group, you will choose which team won the game based on your answers. To choose your winner, you must find out which team scored more points based on the number you got in your final box. We will come together as a class and see which team we all agree won the baseball game! To finish the quest, we will play a mini baseball game in class to have our own math problems in the classroom!

Conclusion

Throughout this WebQuest, you have practiced your basic addition skills through a sports environment. Now you know how to add up scores on the scoreboard to find out who the winner of the game is. You can use this skill in other sports and ages as well. Be sure to draw out the scoreboard we worked on in this WebQuest on a sheet of paper and add your final scores in the empty boxes. Underneath the scoreboard on your sheet of paper, show how you did the math to get your answer. We will look at this together and share our process with the class!
