British flag
The flag of the United Kingdom, known as the Union Jack, is made of three crosses. The upright red cross of St George, the patron saint of England. The white diagonal cross (with the arms going into the corners) is the cross of St Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland. The red diagonal cross is the cross of St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.
National Symbols of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
Every part of Britain (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) has its own symbol. The symbol of England is a red rose. That’s why sometimes England is called “the country of red roses”.
The symbol of Scotland is a thistle. Also Scotland has its own national flag: blue one with a white diagonal cross. When people think of Scotland first of all they remember bagpipers wearing kilts.
Northern Ireland is sometimes called Ulster in Britain (because it is its old name). A symbol of Northern Ireland is a shamrock. Its flag is white with a red cross and white David’s star in the middle of the cross. Also there are a crown and a hand on David’s star. Ireland usually associates with skilful Irish dancers who may dance Irish step for a long time without stopping.
Wales has a daffodil as its symbol. May be it is because there are many daffodils in the Wales Valleys. Walsh flag is white-green with a red dragon in the middle of the flag.
