Introduction
We have started reading 'March' by former congressman John Lewis. John Lewis was a huge leader in the Civil Rights Movement (CRM) and often gave speeches alongside Dr. King, Jr. as well as other prominent figures of the Movement. They were responsible for coordinating and participating in marches, sit-ins, and other forms of peaceful protest. John Lewis became active in the CRM when he was only a teenager and was leading marches, writing speeches, and a leader of an Civil Rights organization by the time he was in his early twenties.

Task
Section One: Woolworth's in Greensboro, North Carolina
John Lewis was first arrested here at this historic moment in Greensboro, North Carolina. Watch the following video and write a response to one of these two questions: ONLY ANSWER ONE QUESTION.
1) What do you believe that peaceful protest allows which violent protest does not?
2) These protesters were peacefully protesting. They had time to devote to the sit in, support, and did not act out violently. The longevity (amount of time which they were able to sit in) of their sit in allowed others to form at the same time as theirs. What is another form of peaceful protest which would have worked well at the same time? Would it have been better at a different place, different store, or as a march? Why?
Section Three: About the graphic novel...use your book to answer the following questions.
3) The book opens on January 20th, 2009. What is the significance of this date? See page 14 for the answer.
4) John Lewis looks at his phone and notices one missed call and one voicemail from a private number. Who do you believe this call be from and what do you believe it is about? Remember the historical importance of this date.
5) On page 18, the lady from Atlanta is stunned to meet John Lewis. Why?
6) What is the significance of chickens for John Lewis (what do they symbolize) AS A CHILD? Why do you think this? Page 23.
Remember, he named all of the chickens, baptized them, and held funerals for them while most people could not tell them apart.

Section Five: Pick a panel of graphics or chapter and explain why you enjoy them, hate them, or why that panel of graphics in particular speaks to you. 1 Paragraph.
For example: The graphics in the introduction of March, on pages 5-9 really caught my attention. This panel caught my attention because of the use of shading. On page 5, where they start, the first drawing is very light in color before John Lewis realizes how much trouble he is in. At page 8, the graphics become darker as the police converge and start to beat John Lewis and the other marchers. On page 9, the last graphic is just blackness. I think that this really speaks to me because it suggests that the march was cut short and reminds me of how somebody might get in a fight and get knocked out which is what happened to many of these protesters.
