Not everybody has the same preferences and habits regarding music. In this WebQuest you have the opportunity to learn more about a specific music genre, listen to some of typical songs and complete their lyrics. It is an opportunity for you to discover something new or to extend your knowledge about an already known genre.

If you need a dictionary, either use one in your classroom or go to the following translation sites:

dict.leo.org

www.dict.cc

Process

Music genres

First of all you should get familiar with some of the most popular music genres. Have a look at the list below and scan through the different options and listen to some examples. Then decide about witch genre you want to know more and do some research. Of course, there are more genres than those listed below, just ask your teacher if you want to know about another genre and then do the research. There are already a few links listed below each genre but feel free to look up more information by yourself. While doing the research make some notes about the most interesting things and prepare yourself to share them with your friends afterwards.

Evaluation

Music genres

Write a short conclusion about your chosen music genre and hand it in next lesson. While writing, please consider the following points:

  • give some general information about the genre as itself
  • show your personal opinion about the gerne
  • name a song you really like and belongs to this genre

lyrics

Visit "lyricstraining.org" and try to fill in the lyrics of a song you like. Make a screenshot of your final score and send it via email to your teacher. Don't worry, your score has no effect on your mark. Feel free to try out several songs as often as you want.

Conclusion

From now on, you are a music genre expert! You're now able to tell your friends and family more about a certain song and maybe something about the history and development as well. In addition, you know where to look up lyrics of a song and by using "lyricstraining.com" you can both increase your listening and writing skills while having fun.

Didactic reasonings

Music is something that occurs in our everyday life in various ways. Most of the time, music is more than just something we are listening to and that's why I think it is important to get to know more than just the genre one is listening to. That's why I decided that the learners can chose a genre and do some research by themselves. After that they should team up with a partner to explain their genre to each other. This way they learn about the different preferences of the students and what motivates them to listen to that kind of music.

In a second activity, students are going to listen and read along the lyrics of a song. This improves their reading and listening skills and it has an effect on their pronunciation as well. During the discussion they're probably going to find out that their view about the song is not the same. That should show that there is no wrong and write in music, but the habits of the people are different.

Last but not least I tried to build this session around the webquest, because here students should work with a computer or another device and not just using it to read the instructions on the webquest.

Aims

Students can/are able to...

  • ...name at least 5 different music genres with examples.
  • ...talk about their preferences regarding music.
  • ...do research on the internet about a certain topic.
  • ...explain a particular music genre in more detail.
  • ...read along the lyrics of a song while listening to it.
  • ...use "lyricstraining" correctly and finish at least one game.
