What was the Victorian Era?
- A time between 1840 and 1900. The aesthectics of a person were very important. Relevant themes during this time period were philosophical controversy, technological innovation, changes in fashion, and the overall trend from classicism at the start to romanticism and eclecticism (the mixing of various historical styles with modern elements).
What are manners and customs?
- Manners reframe to the everyday interactions and attitudes between individuals.
- Customs are very similar to manners but refers more to the community and how people go about their day in a specific venue.
Task
You will have to find out what the daily routine of a male and female was like during the Victorian Era and how they spoke to one another in specific venues.
- Why was etiquette such an important thing to know in this time period?
- Why was hygiene so important in the community?
- How did individuals dress during the Victorian Era? Is it practical compared to modern times and Why?
- What were some everyday activities? List three.
