Manhattan Project

Introduction

You will be creating a Foldable, using 2 sheets of paper, for your webquest on The Manhattan Project.

This site will give you instructions on how to create the foldable. It shows you how to create one using 3 pieces of paper. We are ONLY using 2 sheets of paper so follow the instructions using your 2 sheets of paper.

This foldable will be where you place the answers to the questions that you are searching for during the webquest.

Process

LOS ALAMOS:

First, read the letter we hand you.

- You must Mark the Text of the letter that you read: this means, Number the paragraphs, Circle new/unknown vocabulary, Underline evidence.

Then, in your Foldable on the Los Alamos Tab tell us 

1) Why did the government want to obtain the Los Alamos Ranch school located in Los Alamos?

2) What evidence in the article let you know that Los Alamos was a secret? Cite where you found your answer. Ex. The article says, "jfdklas;dsjfksa" in paragraph #?

Include a picture that you draw and color

Watch this video.

Then, look at this website.

Next, in your Foldable on the Trinity Tab tell us

1) What did Oppenheimer mean when he said, "I am become death, destroyer of worlds" after the first test of the atomic bomb?

2) In what ways will the bomb change the world forever?

Then, go to this website http://nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/ 

In your foldable on the tab labeled Trinity tell us

1) Using the nuke map, how many casualties (deaths) would the Trinity bomb cause if the bomb was dropped on Highland?

- Move the Red marker to where Highland is on the Google map.

- Then select the Trinity bomb from the drop-down menu, and select the Casualties box, and then the Detonate button

HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI:

Look at these websites, website 1 and website 2

Then, in your Foldable on the Hiroshima and Nagasaki tab tell us

1) The names of the bombs, names of the planes and names of the pilots.

2) The date and time the bombs were dropped.

3) The number of casualties for each bomb.

4) Do you believe the United States should have dropped the bomb, Yes or No? Explain your answer.

5) How do the survivors of the bomb explain the aftermath of the bomb?(Use website 2 to help you get more information about what happened after the bombs)

The foldable should include:

1) A title page Tab

2) A Tab for Los Alamos

3) A Tab for Trinity

4) A Tab for Hiroshima and Nagasaki

5) Pictures on each Tab

And, each tab should have complete sentence answers for the questions that were to be answered as you went.

Conclusion

When you have finished put your NAME and CLASS PERIOD on the BACK of the Foldable and Turn it in.
