Malala Yousafzai

Introduction

Welcome Students,

This WebQuest is designed to help you learn about historical figures, such as Malala Yousafzai, and understand the differences in cultures around the world. You will learn about the discrimination and disadvantages women face in different countries and will learn to appreciate your access to an education.

Task

You will be given a list of links that will be helpful in researching more about Malala. After researching Malala you will be making a booklet biography about her life and accomplishments. This booklet biography should include research about her home-life, achievements, books, why she chose to stand up for women's education, and her overall message she shares with the world.

Process

First, the class will complete individual research on Malala Yousafzai. The student must find enough information to write a small booklet biography and answer the following questions through their research.

Who is Malala? What was her homelife like?

What are some of her accomplishments?

What was her book about? Why did she write it? What is the message she wants to share with the world?

What is wrong with the education system in some middle eastern countries?

How do the cultures of middle eastern countries differ from American culture in general? Regarding education?

Why did Malala stand up for women's education?

Would you have stood up for women's rights like Malala?

Here is a list of links to help you find information and research for your booklet biography.

After you have completed your research, it is time to start your booklet biography. This should be an eight page booklet about the life and accomplishments of Malala.

Evaluation

How to make your booklet biography:

Take four sheets of printer paper and line them up together. Fold them hamburger style and staple the crease of the folded side to make an eight page book. On the first page, add your title and name, then, on the rest of the pages, add the answers to the provided questions and additional research you found. For example, the second page should include information about who Malala is and her home-life. These booklet biographies should have color and at least 2 pictures, either printed out or drawn. Please be creative! This booklet will be turned in and graded, then handed back for you to use as notes, so be sure to include the required material and anything you think would help you study.

Conclusion

My goal for this class was to teach you more about Malala Yousafzai. She is an inspirational role model that was determined to change the world. I hope you learned more about other cultures and to appreciate the ability to attend school. Receiving an education is something that is commonly taken for granted by Americans, so my goal was for you to understand how awesome it is to be educated.
